Re: Winter driving tips/techniques
LOL Thanks guys. I've been popping in sporadically the last few months. Trying to keep it limited. Forums can be a dangerous place, and I provided lots of proof of that when I hung out here too much.

Re: rev-match downshifting?
You mean into 1st? I think that's a bit too high a speed for 1st. Second should be no problem there. Just do it like a launch: add a small amount of gas while slowly clutching out. But if you're uphill, rolling at 10 or 15 MPH, 2nd may feel really sluggish. So maybe practice with various blips for v...

Re: rev-match downshifting?
Right, but it's only ever worked with a DC in my own experience. Perhaps I'll try it SC tomorrow. But I have my doubts. And I'm referring to a smooth rolling shift into 1st at very low speeds. I aint talkin about forcing it. Look for yourself what the issue is: 911TT I tried to to downshift at a ver...

Shift to 1st only really works with DC.

Re: Taking off from a stop
My experience (in my FiT at least) has been that no-gas launches work pretty well, but in the real world of city driving, where 99% of people drive automatic and are extremely impatient, I've found that I've needed to apply gas (though not excessively) before hooking up the clutch. Makes for much qu...

Re: Taking off from a stop
Another Honda driver here who launches at somewhere between 1000 and 1500.
I've experimented with the no-gas launch described in the OP, but I found it way too slow in most intersection situations, especially where there's an advance left turn arrow and everyone is in a hurry to take advantage of it.

Re: rev-match downshifting?
When I say "really hooked up", I basically mean make sure it's out far enough so that you're not slipping it while feeding gas. That would suck. Also, if you're reversing uphill, do you really have time to do what you say you're doing? I mean pulling the clutch out to the bite point before...

Re: rev-match downshifting?
Oh now I know what you mean. Try using a little more gas while reversing uphill. Make sure the clutch is really hooked up, and don't pull it out any further. Stalling is no fun on a hill.

Re: rev-match downshifting?
Well, try the flat surface thing with just clutch engagement. It's slow, but you don't want to be going too fast while reversing anyway. On the reversing uphill question, I'm not all that clear on what you mean. I would assume all manual cars would roll forward in that situation until the clutch syn...

Re: rev-match downshifting?
Could be you're feeding too much gas while slipping the clutch, which is not good. It's enough to give just a light touch on the gas with the left foot holding the clutch so it's catching. In fact on level surfaces your car, with all its power, should propel itself with no gas input at all, just clu...

Re: rev-match downshifting?
rolling start is where I am lost. correct me if I am wrong. what you are saying is I start off in 2nd and basically roll out softly in 2nd as I would do in first? what are the benifits of this? You're not "starting off" in 2nd. We're assuming you're rolling slowly at 5 mph. If this is the...
