no, the car wasn't in an accident.
the hook is almost fully closed. there is only about an extra half inch gap, so i'm not really worried about it opening. i'm pretty sure it's the latch that is loose or misaligned

Honda Civic Front Hood Not Closing Properly?
The front hood of my 2002 Honda Civic doesn't close fully. It does however, close enough to prevent the open hood indicator light from turning on. What can I do?
