I've got one your y'all. I was walking home from either the local store, park, or post office one day (all three are in close vicinity, and I forget what exactly I was doing), when I noticed an accident in town. No real damage, nobody hurt. But the whole thing was just plain Dumb . Both cars involve...

Why on earth would I want to be anywhere near a phone when I'm driving? Cell phones don't even have the slightest appeal to me. I refuse to be "on call" to whomever thinks that they're entitled to talk to me. So I'm not home? That's what answering machines are for. It's not my duty to make...

What I don't understand is why some automatic drivers seem offended that I drive a standard. It's fine if you prefer an automatic. No skin off my teeth. But what's wrong with me having the choice ? I guess they just feel that if they have to go on a mind-numbing commute that they couldn't enjoy if t...

Re: Average RPMS @ 70MPH?

My RPM's is about 4,000 when I'm going 70MPH in 5th gear.. is that normal? I don't even recall automatics that high when going 70.. I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're not redlining the car. If you're worried about fuel economy, then your only solution is to drive a bit slower. I have a 19...

1996 Saturn SL Pros: #1. theft-deterrent transmission (well, unless the thief can drive a standard) #2. fuel economy (40+ mpg) #3. manual rack & pinion steering #4. one of the better I-4's I've driven. Good acceleration, no trouble climbing hills. #5. easy to maintain. everything on the engine i...

You can't go wrong with a Mazda 3. I was in a major highway accident in one of those little things. Nobody was hurt, and the vehicle that hit us was an 18 wheeler!

Only if I've had to drive an old car that was missing a gear. Downshifting, all the time. 5th to 3rd for moderate corners, and 5th to 2nd for sharp corners.

Welcome to the site, melinuxfool! I used to spend my summers in Rockport as a little guy - beautiful state. :) It is unfortunate that we're running out of choices for manual transmissions. Most truck companies will "custom order" a manual transmission on a full-size, but that can raise th...

Maine-iac in the house.

New to the site, but I've been lurking a while. I've been driving standard transmission vehicles for a while now. I currently have a 1996 Saturn SL with single overhead cam engine and, of course, a five speed standard transmission. Nothing beats the feeling of a direct connection between driver and ...
