Re: Can we burn out an automatic tranny with low fluid?

FWIW, my GMC only ever got generic Dexron III-rated ATF.

Re: Can we burn out an automatic tranny with low fluid?

I had the same rot in the same spot on my 2002 GMC Sierra. A few times with failed half-ass repairs it leaked down and I limped it home slipping severely before I finally fixed it for good. The 4l60e survived and continues to perform flawlessly to this day, with ~220,000 miles on it including some d...

Re: Where can you work on your car?

If you live in an apartment, where can you go to do things like Oil changes, brake pad changes, engine swaps and other automotive related things? You might select an apartment with that issue in mind as a part of your decision. I've helped a friend with oil changes, brakes, body work, and a head ga...

Re: Stick it to The Man: Cars that still offer a manual transmission in 2016

So, basically...I could transplant all the guts from my rotted GMC into a cheap donor with a good frame and sheet metal?

Somebody get me a flood truck!

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

Come to think of it, the single-DIN unit bouncing around in my yard plow truck that was given to me by a friend, half-ass wired in and just sitting loosely in the huge hole where the OEM radio died, might be an Eclipse. Seems to work ok enough to keep me in music while plowing my snow. No idea how o...

Re: Honest Engines

All that stuff doesnt mean jack if you dont have the power to back it up. It doesn't take a thousand foot pounds to drag 30,000 pounds, and if you can't drag it safely then it's probably good to have your speed limited by insufficient power...but anyway plenty of Class 8 Semi tractors made for towi...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

I can't get over the range limitation/anxiety though on these. I'm picturing myself wanting to drive upstate NY or really anywhere in the new England region (things I do, so it's relevant to my case) and I'm just questioning what happens when the charge runs out... I don't think charging stations a...

I stand corrected!

That certainly makes sense, and I've often wondered why it's not that way...

Re: Honest Engines

Everyday schlubs with un-special licenses can drive bigger, heavier stuff - just not commercially. Anyway the GVWR is nowhere near 26,000, probably more like 12,500...if it was 26,000 it would be Class 6 or 7 truck (not below "a Class 4 or 5 truck"). See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

fifth-wheel trailer towing capacity of 30,000-pounds. That will save some customers with large trailers from having to move up to a Class 4 or 5 truck. Also: "Ram 3500 Heavy Duty maximum gooseneck and conventional hitch maximum trailer weight ratings for 2018 are 31,210 lbs and 20,000 lbs., re...

Re: Wadda You Think I Am...Sum Kinda Brembo?

The GM-developed process is ferritic-nitro carburizing (FNC), a form of case hardening. Oh man, I want that. I'd love for the vent vanes and the hat to be rust-free, even if the nitrogen-rich layer wore off of the friction surface rather than lasting until the rotor is turned. (If it actually does ...

I've heard that on some hybrids, corrosion of the brake components Blame it on the short attention span of mooers. While reading the article I kept forgetting and remembering that it was specifically in the context of hybrids, and when I posted that I totally forgot. I bet conscientious economy-min...

Re: Wadda You Think I Am...Sum Kinda Brembo?

Interesting design. I think I like it. However, I'm not so sure that this part sounds accurate: "Continental assumes, after the results of the initial practical tests, that the Al disk itself is not subject to wear, unlike cast-iron disks. With the New Wheel Concept, abrasion only takes place o...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

On the column shift vs. newfangled buttons issue: My mom's 2015 MKz has newfangled buttons stacked vertically near the already-confusing stereo/HVAC controls. Worse, the Start button is right there at the top of the stack too. The parking brake, if I remember correctly, is just below the ultra-confu...
