Re: Clutch with ankle or whole leg?

Haha, yeah, verbal diarrhea. As you guys mentioned, what I meant to say was do you guys plant your heel on the floor for the initial part of the release and then lift your heel off the floor?

Clutch with heel planted or whole leg?

So I know I've read that you should modulate the clutch pedal with your whole leg as opposed to having your foot planted on the floor for various reasons. However, I've had a few different people help me with learning to drive my car and all of them said they use their ankle for controlling the init...

Re: hill start rpms and clutch life

Not on any grade, no. Depending on engine torque the grade will vary. Eventually it will be too steep and the force of the rolling car's mass will be greater than torque of the car in idle. You can add more gas and still stay there, then it will hold. As you know, that will kill the clutch. Excelle...

Re: hill start rpms and clutch life

Yeah, I had a minor brain fart about the car rolling backwards. I guess the faster you can engage the clutch the less the car will roll backwards, but it will roll backwards nonetheless. On my car I have what is called "hill assist" that keeps the brakes applied for 2 seconds after releasi...

Re: hill start rpms and clutch life

Can someone explain in some more detail how using the handbrake to launch on hills causes less clutch wear? I actually want to learn the handbrake launch anyways but am wondering why it causes less clutch wear. It causes less wear because you can launch at lower RPM with less clutch slippage. I.E.,...

Re: Upshift At Higher RPM

Prodigal Son, what do you mean by "snatching the shifts"? I forget what kind of car you drive, but it strikes me that this is yet another example of why it is a good idea not to try to learn stick in a sports car. They are set up for quick shifting and therefore require quick shifting. Si...

Re: Upshift At Higher RPM

On another note, I've realized the higher RPM you go the more RPM needs to drop for the next gear. Does that mean the high you Rev up, the slow the shift (wait slightly before releasing clutch quickly. Quickly, not dumping it)? Precisely. Though note that how long you have to wait will vary greatly...

Re: Clutching in and speed bumps

Always always always get into the correct gear before you turn or go over a bump, or do anything else. Don't float round, through, or over anything. You will be both smoother and safer that way. Remember, one of the biggest advantages that a manual has over and auto is that the driver can anticipat...

Re: Clutching in and speed bumps

I go over this one speedbump that is on a hill so I think I could normally clutch in and pick up 2nd if it were on a flat road, but since it is on an incline I feel like I am going too slow to pick up 2nd. If I want to downshift to 1st at such a slow speed, do I need to blip the throttle to rev-matc...

Re: Sluggish acceleration Mazda3 2.3--is my technique wrong?

Shouldn't the RPMs drop proportionally the same going from 1 to 2 regardless of the RPM at which you shift? Based on the numbers you gave, 6900 - 4100 and 2250-1800 this seems not to be the case.

Re: Clutching in and speed bumps

The reason I asked the question is because the condos where I live have a number of speed bumps on the property that I have to go over all the time. If I know I can go over them engaged in 2nd gear then I didn't understand why I would need to clutch in. The second thing that confused me is that if y...

Clutching in and speed bumps

I've been trying to figure out why this is necessary and found some old threads on this but there didn't seem to be a consensus. In the FAQ post on this I am a little confused about step 5 there. If you are still going fast enough to get back into 2nd gear, then why did you need to clutch in in the ...

Re: Question about my actual technique

Not to threadjack but this might help the OP too. I am trying to get single clutch downshifting with rev-matching down and I have a question about when to blip the throttle - before I move the shifter or as I am moving the shifter? I know in some threads around here it says while moving the shifter ...
