Re: My stick shift bloopers...

I thought I would share from my phone, yet another first in a manual vehicle... Barefoot heel toe downshifting!! It was a strange feeling.. toes curled around brake and edge of foot for the throttle. Anyone else?

Re: Let off gas paddle when clutch in
Depends if you have torque or not.FDSpirit wrote:We lives a lonely life. But yes, I also give it a little bit of throttle as I begin to release the clutch.
Friends diesel vw... I would no gas every start, even on very steep hills. Couldn't get the thing to stall... ever.

Re: Starting a Car w/ Engine Already Running
I agree with all of the above, and I think that we all understand what is going on here. Im not even sure why we are discussing it... HA  But yes, the amount of clamping force can be changed just by increasing or decreasing torque/power sent through the clutch. Rather I should say that the effe...

Re: Starting a Car w/ Engine Already Running
A clutch is not fully engaged until it has reached the end of its travel. Negative. Once the clutch stops slipping, it is fully engaged. You should know that a clutch can become fully engaged before the pressure plate springs have applied 100% of their tension. The rotational speeds of the drivetra...

Re: clutchless shifting
Believe it or not, with the clutch up in neutral, by pushing against a syncro for a split second is a good way to tell the health of your syncros. Also, 1/2 a second isn't going to kill it. Plus the first gear syncro isn't ever really used much (maybe just if you autoX or something)

Re: Shifting from 4th to 5th smoothly
I try to explain this to so many people, but most fail to understand for some reason. As you move to higher gears, the difference in rpm is much smaller. What you want to do, with all shifts, but more so with the higher gears, is crack the throttle as you shift. The goal is to crack the throttle eno...

Re: Jockey Shifter
That is very interesting. I never knew that there were car-like shifters on earlier motorcycles. And also, that has to be one of the dumber things to have a foot operated clutch on a bike. Not a good idea aha! But yeah, Ive never really been a fan of the console mount shifters in the EP3 and Element...

Re: High pitched noise, same for hills or WOT
Ill have to check with him, but I dont think either of his impreza's have that problem. I know mine makes funky sounds if I floor it at low rpm in something other than 1st. Honestly, thats something that you arent supposed to do anyway. Older cars would ping/knock/whatever. The sound may just be the...

Re: Driving Stick is Stressing Me Out - Help !
To sum some things up... As we have all said before: 1) The clutch is DESIGNED to SLIP 2) Simply avoid un-necessary slippage as much as possible to lengthen its life. 3) Stalling not only is not bad for the engine, rather it is a sign of the operator simply being too gentle. 4) When downshifting, NO...

Friend has the same car.
Whistling sound on clutch engagement only? Or even wheel completely engaged at low rpm?
Mine makes grating/grunting noises at low rpm 2nd gear, part throttle.

Re: Is Third Pedal An Anti Theft Device
I would say that most people who are smart enough to get into a car could drive a three peddler.
However, I think its a good security device to keep your friends from messing with your car.
Hell, one jumped in mine one day and couldn't figure out how to start it and gave up

Re: Drving Before Car is Warmed Up
Just to make this clear: Do whatever you want in order to minimize excessive slippage of the clutch as well as shock to the drivetrain. Its a balance between shock and slippage, as well as fuel use. And also, you can have a clutch in a scenario where it is halfway out, and not slipping. As long as t...
