Re: Autonomous cruise control

As I've pondered on that diatribe, adaptive cruise must be making the "wolf pack" phenomenon drivers' ed talked about worse. I recently had a business trip to California, and it was especially noticeable there that I'd come up on a clot of slow-moving traffic, and if I was assertive enough...

Re: Autonomous cruise control

I don't care for it because it annoys me at best and I find it dangerous at worst. By its design, it can't take a holistic view of the traffic situation, and it very seldom does what I want. Coming up on somebody slower in my lane, its approach is to maintain speed up to its set following distance a...

Some of the '70s Trans Ams got "6.6 LITRE" on the hood scoop too.

Re: Autonomous cruise control

That's a long way away. The levels of autonomy build on each other, but they don't get easier as you go...They get harder. The "Level 3" S-Class Mercedes is about to introduce has a way to handle the situation if the driver doesn't take over when they're told it's time. It stops. In the tr...

Re: Everything you NEVER Wanted to Know About Stop/Start

Our MDX has stop/start and a brake hold mode that holds the service brakes for you until you tap the gas again, which comes in handy for those long trains and long traffic lights (and leaves the brake lights on, which my usual approach of applying the parking brake does not). There is a definite seq...

Re: My Mercury Pickup Truck

We always used section line road to section line road, as those were apparently laid out more precisely than the highway mile markers. Not all parts of the country are laid out in a grid, though.

Re: Automotive Slang

Air bagged (for adjustable ride height). The short form is most commonly applied to heavily customized vehicles that usually use it to dramatically lower the vehicle while it's parked. Not to be confused with hydraulics, which you need to make the car bounce without hitting bumps or drive down the s...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

Given that description I would initially suspect a bad master or slave cylinder. A clutch that's not fully disengaging can make it difficult to shift, especially for those not accustomed to shifting...Ahem...Correctly. There are other problems that can cause high shift effort, but that's the only on...

Re: Automotive Slang

That may be the thing that "saves" the industry, but, historically, gliders have been a way to use pre-emissions drivetrains that actually work in what are otherwise new heavy trucks. Sounds like the Biden EPA is in the process of clamping down on that.

Re: S10 was improved by accident today

I wouldn't think liability-only insurance on either of those would be too ugly. They're basically already totaled out, neither of them is much of a battering ram in traffic, and the demographics don't seem like they'd drive the actuarial tables crazy. Of course, only keeping full coverage on the veh...

Re: Automotive Slang

My understanding is that it will roll...The wheels turn and the axles aren't bound up, so it can be pushed around, but it's not capable of moving under its own power. Drivetrain may be missing or non-functional.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

I see a lot of cars, being a tech and all, and I can tell you the one feature I've never seen fail is rain sensing wipers. Mine still work on my '08 The only failure we've had that I'd characterize as something of a "false-negative" is when we get just a little spray that doesn't reach th...
