Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

No. YOU don't have to push it almost to redline to shift. THEY have to push it almost to redline to shift. It's required by the specification they're using to do the test. I can't even fault the government for the original spec, since it's an SAE spec. I can fault SAE for a spec that was apparently ...

Re: Buying guide actually updated to 2021

There's apparently some work in progress on an aftermarket short-throw shifter, and I 3D printed a pedal extender for the accelerator in my truck to get it set up appropriately for heel-and-toe. Frustrations, yes, but not necessarily insurmountable.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

Most of the USDM minivans were available with manuals but the take rate was quite low and they went away mostly in the late-'80s/early-'90s.

Re: Manual transmission enhances attention and driving performance of ADHD adolescent males

The summary doesn't discuss how accomplished their test subjects were and I'm not seeing a full-text link that doesn't require registration. That would be an interesting variable to consider. Even once the mechanics are, well, mechanical, it does probably provide most a little extra incentive to loo...

Re: Is The Ares Panther’s “Fake Manual” DCT Almost The Perfect Transmission?

I've long thought the way forward with take rates so low was probably going to have to be a DBW shifter and clutch, maybe with some force feedback. I envisioned it as a swappable shift quadrant and pedal box (since everything's ones and zeros anyway and it could just plug in and handshake with the c...

Re: How Many Speeds?

You can get more performance with more gears, too, especially if performance isn't just quarter mile to you. There's no saying you have to use them all in every situation, either, but they can be nice to have: If approaching a target speed that is at the low end for a given gear, I commonly run out ...

Re: Manuals you'll miss in 2019...

It sounds like they made an effort to make it feel right, with the discussion of using regen [to drag the RPM down during shifts]. They probably would not take that as far as being able to make it buck with a mishandled clutch, and it would probably be impossible to stall it.

Re: If You Want To Learn To Drive Stick, Just Learn How To Ride A Motorcycle

That sounds like a horrible idea. Maybe he's been at it long enough to have forgotten, but there's a lot of "there" there just in the balancing and the cornering and the dreaded U-turn box. Trying to grasp all that WHILE trying to learn what a clutch is...Wow. The first thing my brother di...

Re: Manuals you'll miss in 2019...

A CVT is used to deal with a power source with a narrow powerband and is best used in low-torque applications. Both of those things are the opposite of what you get with an electric motor.

It could be argued the Corvette used a two-speed automatic in the '80s, with the Doug Nash 4+3.

Re: Manuals you'll miss in 2019...

The difference is that the performance/efficiency tradeoff for saving the cost, weight, and complexity of a multispeed transmission with an ICE is crippling (so much so that the Model T was a two-speed), while the performance/efficiency benefit of adding the cost, weight, and complexity of a multisp...
