So I lied about when part 3 was coming. My bad! Everything I wrote up so far was background information, but none of it addressed your questions about shifting smoother. So I'm going to finish that up today (though not right now).
EDIT: okay, maybe tomorrow - work got pretty busy today.

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?
Part 2. Okay, where were we? Ah, yes. We need our input shafts and output shafts to be turning at the same speed when we're shifting. I glossed over it before, but to be conceptually accurate you should consider the output shaft and the gears of the input shaft to be a single unit They're moving par...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?
So, I might notice some synchro resistance even if I'm shifting at approximately the right speed? My Mazda actually has an indicator that suggests exactly when to shift up a gear, so I don't think I could be too off. FYI, that indicator is only looking to see if you're cruising at an inefficient ge...

Still here. Never left, actually; I've visited pretty much every weekday since I've joined. Just not posting frequently.

Re: Just took a class for motorcycle lessons...
Congrats on the experience and the new endorsement! Super jealous that it's free in PA; the MSF Basic RiderCourse was $250 when I took it in California. Best experience ever, though! Well worth it to anyone else thinking of getting onto two wheels.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi
If I ever get married my wife might strongly disagree with me, but I don't really want a wedding. I'd be fine signing the papers at the courthouse and then having a party somewhere with families and up to 20 friends. Done deal. Nothing sells the idea of a small wedding better than planning a large ...

Re: When (if ever) is it time to give up driving stick?
Thanks for the lesson, but you're not telling me anything that I don't already know. I learned long ago that even the most efficient ICE loses about 75% efficiency as wasted heat. But that waste heat is also free when it comes to using it to heat the cabin. Why? Simple....it's already a completely ...

Re: When (if ever) is it time to give up driving stick?
The requirement for resistive heating power is a small fraction compared to the energy expenditure of moving a 5500lb vehicle at 65mph for hours on end. You're ignoring the fact that heat is simply a byproduct of internal combustion and is therefore "free" for all intents and purposes. To...

Re: When (if ever) is it time to give up driving stick?
When I get a Tesla. This is pretty much it for me. My fiancée and I are both manual transmission purists, and we will never not have a car in the stable with a stick shift. But I'm also a technologist and a huge supporter of electric vehicles. The Tesla Model S is my current aspirational car. I've ...

As long as they are "stock trucks".... funny I don't remember seeing any vehicles with sticker lights last time I as at the dealership. Interesting tidbit: "Stock" in this instance doesn't mean 'unmodified'. It's referring to "giant batches of liquor". 'Stock' is an in...

Sometimes you just have to write it all out in order to see everything from a bird's eye view. Would this be your first home purchase? Are you eligible for any first-time homebuyer assistance and would it be enough to offset the additional costs of ownership (property taxes, maintenance, etc.)? Do y...

Re: What computer OS do you use the most?
At work I'm on Windows 7, and since the vast majority of my at-computer time is for work, that was my vote in the poll.
At home I'm completely in the Apple ecosystem. Running OS X Mavericks on my laptop (with an XP VM for special circumstances), and iOS 7.1.1 on my phone and iPad.
