Why Americans seem to prefer that body style over cab over?

Re: 2010 Cars available with Manual Transmission
We have room on our roads and in our parking lots for that style, so we don't have anything stopping us from using it. Some positive reasons:
- easier to work on the engine (and more room for engine/equipment)
- more room in cab
- more safety for driver in a collision
- aesthetically better (of course that's entirely subjective)
- can be incorporated into a more fuel-efficient aerodynamic design (not that they actually do this very often)
There may be more but I don't remember.
In the 1970s the cabover gained popularity in the US but eventually fell out of favor again.
When I was in the construction business with the trucks I mentioned earlier, I suggested that we really should have a cabover. Instead of having well over a meter of extra truck in front of the driver, why not have an extended cab and a large frame-mounted toolbox all in the same length of truck, right?
However, it was theorized that our customers were more comfortable with a vehicle that looks more like a pickup truck in their yard while we work.

I haven't operated a cab over before, but I'm told that the ride is bumpier on those.

I too haven't been in one but I assumed that the ride is bumpier. In general, all other things being equal, I've found that the closer you are to the axle the bumpier the ride is. Having not been in one to confirm, I didn't want to post it as part of the list of reasons...

Re: 2010 Cars available with Manual Transmission
I've driven plenty of vehicles whose front axles were behind where I sit. They are actually quite smooth. I guess air springs were a big part of it.
Back to trucks, Toyota has a subsidary called Hino, making 23,000 GVW trucks that are 23 to 30 feet long and a 6 speed manual. If I need a truck, I would so get one of these over the wimpy Tundra.

I don't know if people know about this / care about this, I know the Scion stores will be here sometime in september on the west coast of canada.

Re: 2010 Cars available with Manual Transmission
As 2011 models... when the 2011s start rolling out I'll begin compiling a list for that. Sad that the Scion iQ will only get a CVT in North America... well I'm wishfully hoping that the Canadian version will get a stick shift.Caramel wrote:"Scion

Re: 2010 Cars available with Manual Transmission
You left out the Mitsubishi Eclipse.
All 2011 Ford F-Superduty trucks have a 6-Speed automatic (crraaaap).
All 2011 Ram trucks have a manual, but whether or not this is for base-model (tiny engine) or heavy duty versions (or both) is something to research.
GMT900 platform GM pickups no longer offer a manual.
Neither japanese full-size trucks offer a manual (and Nissan doesn't offer a V6. Neither company offers a "heavy duty" option).
Honda's Ridgeline (I never liked it one bit) doesn't offer a stick either.
That leaves you with the true mixture of the compact/midsize realm of pickups. (Ranger, Taco, Frontier, Canyon/Colorado and Dakota- and their related crossbreeds- B-Series, Equator, i-Series, and Raider).

Cool thanks.Chris H. wrote:You left out the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Um I thought only the 6.7L Diesel Cummins engine came with manual, no other engine comes with manual, so really only the HD 2500 and 3500 gets manual only if you upgrade to the Cummins. That's Canada though, not sure about the US. I'd totally rock that truck if I needed one... but unfortunately I don't need a truck. At least not one that big.
I'll start compiling a 2011 list soon.

Is it unfortunate because you'd like to have a fifth wheel travel trailer to tow?DKaz wrote:unfortunately I don't need a truck. At least not one that big.

Re: 2010 Cars available with Manual Transmission
A Toyota Tacoma with towing package can tow a trailer just fine... but if I wanted to tow six horses at 90mph, sure the Ram 2500 would do the job.

Re: 2010 Cars available with Manual Transmission
How would the horses feel about that?
You definitely can't tow six horses safely at any speed with a Tacoma...a six horse trailer has to weigh well over 10,000 pounds loaded.
Horses have one horsepower each, horse trailers should have treadmills to use that energy to save fuel.

Re: 2010 Cars available with Manual Transmission
I'm sure the horses don't like it but I see it at least once a road trip... a big badass Ram just ripping up the highway zooming past my barely above the speed limit Mazda 5.
I wonder how many cows a Ram 2500 could tow? And if horses provide horsepower, what do cows provide?

Re: 2010 Cars available with Manual Transmission
Actually horses average out at slightly less than one horsepower each, but can when needed put out about 15 hp for short durations.
