Well, of course the FWD with snowies will do better than AWD with all-seasons...but AWD with snow tires will do better than FWD with snow tires. I don't understand why so many people think AWD and snowies are an either/or decision...you can have both and have the ultimate snow-driving car.potownrob wrote:on a side note, i find it disturbing how much propaganda for AWD vehicles is out there, especially after switching from subaru (AWD) to VW (FWD). The VW with snow tires did better in the snow and ice than the subaru with highly rated and practically new all season tires. before i got the vw and (after research) decided to put on snows, i had been brainwashed into thinking i needed AWD or 4WD to do well in the snow...

Re: 4WD manuals
i hear what you're saying, but what i'm saying is most AWD cars come with all season (or even summer) tires, and i'd imagine very few people in snowy/icy regions (other than those required to run them, like in mainland europe) run snow tires in the winter.ashowofhands wrote:I don't understand why so many people think AWD and snowies are an either/or decision...you can have both and have the ultimate snow-driving car.

Re: 4WD manuals
He's still right. No mass-market consumer vehicles - AWD, FWD, RWD, 4WD, 6WD, 0WD, whatever - come with winter tires. They all come with all-season tires (except up-level package sports cars with summer tires). To compare apples to apples you could compare them both with all-season tires or both with winter tires.potownrob wrote:i hear what you're saying, but what i'm saying is most AWD cars come with all season (or even summer) tires, and i'd imagine very few people in snowy/icy regions (other than those required to run them, like in mainland europe) run snow tires in the winter.ashowofhands wrote:I don't understand why so many people think AWD and snowies are an either/or decision...you can have both and have the ultimate snow-driving car.
This winter I've noticed a lot of winter tires in use, on vehicles of all types. I'm glad to see it. I do seem to be the only one running studs though.

For US market 2013 BMW 3-series AWD model to retain a 6-speed manual gearbox option is the 335i xDrive only.Boston Fit wrote:

Re: 4WD manuals
Actually, the out going 2013 328i xDrive coupe and convertibles can still be had with a no cost 6-speed manual transmission option. But I think these are no longer in production and can only be sourced from a dealer inventory. Knowing American market finding a six speed at the dealer lots is like finding a unicorn, especially in the markets where AWD makes sense - North East, Northern Mid West, Oregon/Washington States.Boston Fit wrote:Ficksed it Thanks.

I've just discovered that the "Buying Guide" link at the top lists many 4wd and awd cars:

Good catch! Some of the info seems outdated, though. For example - just eyeballing it - I don't think the 2013 Hyundai Tucson or Genesis is available in stick even though the Buying Guide (currently) says it is.

They are if you can get past the salesperson trying to sell whatever is on the lot and don't mind waiting a few weeks.Boston Fit wrote:Good catch! Some of the info seems outdated, though. Re: 4WD manuals
Looks like you're in Canada; I wonder if that explains the discrepancy. Is the Buying Guide a Canadian list? According to Hyundai's U.S. website, the Tucson and Genesis are auto-only. They might have been available in the U.S. with m/t in prior years, though.

Genesis sedan or coupe? The sedan has always been auto only, the coupe manual or auto.

I mean the AWD variants. I don't think you can get any 2013 Hyundais with AWD and manual in the U.S.
