looks like that would be uber confusing to shift, though not sure a split or dual range box would be that much better :?: :? :o 8)

That's actually a 9-speed.

It's likely the R/L and 7/8 gates have some kind of lockout and it's sprung to 3/4. If so it wouldn't be too bad.

Do they make a bellhousing to fit the classic Buick/Olds/Pontiac/Cadillac engine pattern? I want it.

(No, I couldn't afford it anyway, even if it wasn't too large and heavy and all the wrong ratios.)

That's nothing.....some of the cars in the F&F were 18-speed manuals.

Auggggh! I would NOT want one of these! Thank you but a 5 speed is plenty.
In fact I would like to go back to a 4 speed or even a three speed. My three
speed 1977 F100 did just fine without the extra gears. But the creeper gear (L) is nice!

8 + creeper? That's a good start. Give me a 2 speed differential, a 2 speed transfer case, and an add-on overdrive unit and I'll be happy as a pig in slop. Might not be much space for a driveshaft with all that stuff installed, though. ;)

Paul, why are you so weary of tech? Not everything is bad. Fewer gears isn't always worse. Power windows aren't always bad (most never break, ever and manual windows can break as well).

Not to say that 8 speeds is necessary, but I do think 6 speed gearboxes are just about the sweet spot in terms of ratios - in most cases. Why would you ever want to go back to a 4-speed? You want to drive a 4-speed, then take your 5 or 6 speed and skip shift. 4-speed experience without all of its inherent limitations.

Tech has it's place, and that place is definitely not in my car. I think a 5-speed manual is just about perfect, you can drive it like a 4-speed in town and use 5th gear on the highway. I think a 4-speed and a 3-on the tree would be a blast too. But 8 speeds is just way to much, I mean how could you ever use all those gears? You're not driving a semi!

Well, those 8 gears ARE in a commercial heavy truck application.

If tech has no place in your car, then you wouldn't mind riding in a horse carriage to work? It's all about comfort and convenience and performance at its core.

I had a 2008 VW with 5 close ratio speeds. I was in 5th before 30mph, then I wished for more gears. I regularly drive up to 70mph, so there was room for plenty more gears. With how often I shifted on the way to 30mph, one could extrapolate that I could have used 6 more gears.

My Buick has wide ratios and needs a wide range, but with more gears they could be closer and still offer the range I need.
