Couple drove through every county in the lower 48 states

Post by bk7794 »

Here is the story: http://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/ ... 44757.html

One thing that intrigues me the most is that they did it all in one car. Have you ever had emotional attachment to a car you've owned?

Interesting article. They say they average 50,000 miles a year, but they don't say how long it has taken them. They only met in 2005 so they must have started traveling together shortly after that based on the car mileage.

I've had minor emotional attachments to the cars that I have owned, but not to the "I'm sad I'm getting rid of you my favoritist car ever so I'm sobbing" level. More of the "you've been a good car and I will have fond memories of you - but peace out!"

EDIT: I misread the article, it said they met in 2005, didn't get married until 2012. I've corrected my mistake.

There also has to be an error somewhere in the article because it mentions that they have been to 3,122 of the US' 3,142 counties, but the map later shows they are only missing 5 counties in Hawaii and 5/10 counties in Alaska if they have already completed the lower 48 states. As wikipedia states, "As of 2013, the United States has 3,007 counties and 137 county equivalents for a total of 3,144 counties and county equivalents." So somewhere, that math by yahoo is wrong.

Not only did they do it in one car, but they did it in a 2nd Gen Intrepid, which in and of itself is a miracle. Those cars weren't quite known to be the most reliable things.

To be quite honest, I'd hate life if I had to spend half a million miles behind the wheel of that thing.

Hope they have a standard shift. Would sure be a boring waste to do all that in an automatic.

Blows my mind that the engine was original. I'm sure the tranny has been replaced numerous times.

I do understand, I've felt emotionally attached to a car once with all of the adventures I've been through with it.
