New Tires...

Post by jcprov21 »

Radical new tire design by Michelin. The next generation of tires.
They had a pair at the Philadelphia car show.

These tires are airless and are scheduled to be out on the market soon.

The bad news for law enforcement is that spike strips will not work on these tires.

This is what great R&D will do, and just think of the impact on existing technology:

no more air valves no more air compressors at gas stations
no more repair kits

These are actual pictures taken in the South Carolina plant of Michelin. It will be awhile before they are available to the automotive industry.

I read about those possibly coming out a while back, but didn't think they would follow through. I wonder how well they ride.

Can I vote the we make them add sidewalls? Cuz those tires are just plain fugly! I couldn't even tell where the rims ended and the tires began when I first saw the picture.

yeah, i think sidewalls would look much better, even if they were only on the outside of the tire (if you can call it a tire).

Aren't these called the "Twheel"? They were actually shown a few years ago. All I can say is that they look um, different

edit: Never mind, I just saw the caption at the bottom of the photo. Jumped the gun!

Hm... I also saw these a while ago, and just thought of a possible problem. What happens when stuff gets caught inside the holes of the wheel. That would throw the balance of the wheel, wouldn't it?

Also, that really does look pretty ugly. With these tweels, we can't put any tire dressing to make the tire look nice and clean :)

Also, I can't imagine the ride to be very smooth.

I think these wheels come with the sidewalls, and they only removed it for the picture, so that you can see the inside. Otherwise, they could just show any tire, and be like "yeah it has no air inside...".

It would only make sense to add sidewalls to these. I'd be down if they did.

a little high but probably wouldn't be too bad if they never needed replacing and you drove your car for a long time.

i'd assume they'd HAVE to put sidewalls on it for production use.

Call me crazy, but I'd love to have a set of naked ones like that ... with no sidewall.

Okay, you craaazy!

Actually, I wouldn't mind having a set of non-sidewalls. Be pretty neat cruising around with them. You'd definately catch peoples attention.
