The site is positively weird today. I am not getting any new post notices, and there is very little activity.

Several 500 errors here as well . . .

I'm still getting new post notices...at least the little icons telling me there's new drama added to the post. ;) And I only get 1-2 500 errors a day, much better than before.

My total of 500 errors last night comes out to about 40-50.
I couldn't log in, then it let me. Then I couldn't log out... WTF?

PHPBB has handled some mighty heavy traffic as I've seen...
I've been to about 15 other forums on the net, and a bunch of them have PHPBB. Some of them have occasional bursts of reeeeally heavy traffic.
Still doesn't mean that PHPBB is built to handle a failure to get a required file operation gracefully.

Yup - we've logged them. Thanks for the input; we're working on it.

My money is on the database jamming up. PHP times out and sends no reply, and the web site itself gives you a 500 error because the script didn't conform to its specifications.

SHOW FULL PROCESSLIST on the database during a 500 error may be revealing. This information is meant for the administrator (Standardshifter)

Yes, I do this myself.

We've been going through and eliminating IPs that are giving us trouble - SS will have more comments once things have been smoothed over.

Edit: looks like today is doing better - dare I speak so soon? :P

Unlike the GoogleBot bust of May, there's not one single obvious source this time around, even when logging the database server during peak error time. Just made another change, see how it goes today...
