Is there any chance of this forum being upgraded to the new version of phpBB now that it is available?

Yes, but it takes a little longer than 24 hours after a release.

The new software leaves the older version in the dust.

One of the reasons we are taking our time with any upgrades.

We've had a few cases of it crashing our server with SQL 1040 errors since we put it on.

Eventually, most likely. When the bugs are worked out to a stable level.
Just like most computer gurus will upgrade to Vista when Microsoft fixes it.
(and so will I. If I get a new machine, Vista is coming off until looooong after they have SP1 out. When SP2 for XP came out, I hardened the machine as best I could, and waited about four months. Then I got it, and it worked.)

I'm looking forward to seeing the new software though.

The Goolag scanner has some pretty nice stuff (from a security auditor or cracker's point of view) on earlier forum software... hehe. I kinda wish I could hit SS.com with everything that scanner has and see what I get, but I'd have to have some heavy ass permission to do that, or I'd get my IP blocked and get slapped off the internet like a bad puppy. Everybody knows that being slapped off teh interwebz like a bad puppy = epic, titanic, meme/flash/running-net-joke worthy, bag-over-your-head mega fail.
