If you ask on the internet, true. I suspect that people are too embarassed to admit it. The V6 was always the far better seller on the new car lot, so there should be more out there.

The GM 3800 V6 is supposed to be a great engine (long lasting and efficient) and I'd roll a 1998 V6 Camaro as an economy car for sure.

V6 Camaro as an economy car? That would hardly make sense. The V6's fuel economy wasn't all that stellar and it isn't practical enough in other areas to justify that.

I believe that with cylinder deactivation, V8 fuel economy should be about the same as for the V6 (which doesn't have cylinder deactivation feature).

The 3800 is very efficient, the car isn't terribly heavy, the car is very aerodynamic, but I assume it was geared low to make up for lack of power...and driven by people who want the opposite of economy. I bet I'd get the same economy from a V8-geared 4th gen V6 as I get from my VW, and have plenty of power for my driving. As for practicality, my commute car just doesn't need much, and a horizontal hatch as on a Camaro would be easier for me than the vertical hatch on my Rabbit (which is awkward for me when I'm carrying stuff, as it opens out towards me).

2002 Camaro V6 manual EPA rating: 17/29.
2008 Rabbit manual EPA rating: 22/29.

I know it's a really odd idea, but I have odd priorities. It doesn't matter anyway, they're pretty hard to find at reasonable prices.

The 5th gen V8 auto has the L99 engine with cylinder deactivation. The V8 manual has the LS3 engine with more power but no cylinder deactivation. The V6, manual or auto, has the latest Direct Injection technology and is EPA rated for better fuel economy than the V8.

2010 Camaro:
V-6 (304 hp, 273ft-lb - with a nearly flat torque chart)
Manual: 17/29 mpg
Automatic: 18/29 mpg

V-8
Manual (426 hp): 16/24 mpg
Automatic (400 hp): 16/25 mpg

^ I guess it shouldn't surprise me that they don't offer cylinder deactivation with Amish transmission - It is more difficult to make the activation/deactivation process transparent than with a slushbox. Probably in these troubled times, they thrifted and didn't staff themselves to make the extra effort.j

I think it's a combination of that, and the issue of manual transmission drivers being more purists who dislike cylinder deactivation, and not needing it for their fuel economy goals (which probably involved not having a "gas guzzler" tax on the car).

My Charger 5.7 L 5-speed Slushie had cylinder deactivation and got 27.5 MPG on long trips. I was quite happy with how smoothly it transitioned. That's what development engineering can do for you, given a good initial design. It's much like throttle-by-wire. Some companies do a good job with it and others don't. If there is anyplace they are apt to scrimp, it's on low sales volume models, like those with Amish transmissions. There is a lot of work besides the engine mechanicals and the software to run them. You have to tune the powertrain mounts for 4 cylinder and 8-cylinder operating modes. You have to tune the exhaust system for 4 & 8-cylinder modes. You have to tune the damper in the clutch hub for.....the list just keeps growing. It takes a very committed company to do the right thing even when there will be little or no return on the added investment in dollars and manpower to cover a small volume application. GM really isn't in the position to do that at this time.

Personally, I think cylinder deactivation is one of the greatest motoring accomplishments since the first use of pneumatic tires. It makes perfect sense. It doesnt add weight like a hybrid, you still get all the power and fun of a large engine when you actually can tell its there (honestly, every engine feels pretty damn similar while cruising), and you save a bunch of money on gas.

Nice finds, but those are pre-OBDII, and more importantly they don't have the 3.8...they've got the lame 3.4. One of them has "286k" on it, I'd assume that's km, which is still a lot.

Looks like you've got a lot more supply there than I have here.

my neighbor is selling his maro last i knew but i think its a v-8 and an auto i will have to check. think its an early 2000's maybe an '01? might be '02 i forget

quit brainwashing him people, how does one go from looking for a new edge GT to looking for a v6 camaro. they are pathetic excuses for a car, just like v6 mustangs. they are slow, useless, worthless and are made for soccer moms in midlife crysis that want a poser car to relive their high school days.

like i said before, everyone who wanted a v8 mullet wagon already has an army of them rusting in their backyards, now everybody is buying 4th gen v6s for their kids because they are too slow to kill themselves in. they are just like 250 bikes, it looks like the real thing but under its guts its anything but the real thing.

buying a v6 camaro or a v6 mustang is like buying a snap on air gun and opening the box and theres a harbor freight air gun in there. it raises your expectations and greatly underdelivers. trust me i know, i have a friend with a v6 new edge mustang, that thing is pretty pathetic.

if your gonna get a mustang or a camaro, your gonna get the v8. simple as that. if you want fuel economy, get another mx3 with a K8. it will be faster than the turd gen mullet wagon anyway and rock out 30 mpg
