HELP! RI/MA/CT - I need a 14 spline clutch alignment tool

Post by theholycow »

RI/MA/CT folks: If you know someone who has/had a Camaro, S10, Sonoma, or Astro with a manual transmission, please ask them if they have a leftover 14-spline 1 inch clutch alignment tool. I'll deliver a six pack of their choice of beer in exchange.

Most parts stores only have $30 tools that aren't specific to each clutch...I'd rather use the $2 kind with the splines that comes in clutch kits. Advance Auto sells them but they don't have a 14 spline one - their computer lists a 26 spline larger diameter one for that application, which is totally wrong. I asked the guy to check all of the ones they have on the shelf, no luck.

Let me Spline this to you, Mooey: If you can't find that pacific tool, consider making one from a couple dowel rods. You don't really need to engage the splines in the clutch hub, piloting in the ID of the hub splines will do. You just need to get the disk concentric enough to the pilot bushing that, after you wiggle it enough to get the splines to line up, your lubricated input shaft slides in through the hub and into the bore in the bush (Yes, in some Japanese translations, the noun-name of the part is "bush", since "Bushing" must obviously be a verb form.) - Makes it sound like an x-rated procedure, right?

I was thinking of improvising. I thought of a way to do it, then googled for improvised clutch alignment tool and sure enough, plenty of others do it. Worst case scenario I improvise.
