i disagree. i loved the 1st gen lumina. they even had a Z34 series with a 5 speed manual that ran mid 14s (pretty good for the early 90s).

If GM didnt have GMC but instead made only Chevy trucks, did away with Saturn, and refocused Pontiac, they wouldnt be in nearly as much trouble

They would still need Pontiac as the performance (sporty) and midrange brand. I cant see bottom and top surviving without a central tier.

GM disagrees with you apparently.

They're keeping Chevy, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac as part of the bankruptcy. GMC I have no idea why. Buick isnt that hot here, but apparently its big enough in China that killing it would do more harm than good.

They dont need a separate brand for every single niche, that's exactly what got them where they are today. Just have performance oriented Chevy models. Oh wait, they already do. SS's and 'Vettes, anyone?

Honda and Toyota are surviving mighty fine with just bottom and top.

I think most people think of GMC as only the badge-engineered chevy models. They've got whole lines of commercial big trucks, and a dealer/service network to match.

You're right, forgot about their big commercial trucks, but they can just as easily consolidate that under the Chevy brand as well. Ford has medium duty trucks that are sold under - get this - the Ford brand. :o

EDIT:
LOL OMG WTF R U SRS?

They definitely f**k that up massively.
I supposed keeping only Chevy for non-luxury and making it more diverse could work.

Fack, I didn't know they were selling the big trucks as Chevies too. Well WTF, then...all that's left is a dealer/service network.

They have made it quite clear that we will not get the G8, even in the form of a RWD Impala or anything like that. The G8 is dead with no plans to use the platform for a RWD Chevy 4 door.

The closest thing you can get in the US is the Camaro.

You can always buy a Holden Commodore from Australia. I can see that Government Motors doesn't want bailout $$ going to the Austrailian plant that build the G8. At least the CTS isn't erased from the product list.

I think GM is too big and too many people had to ok any decisions. For some reason, GM had to keep building Hummer and Escalade when gas was $4/gal last year. Meanwhile, Ford sold Mazda back to Mazda and Jaguar to Tata, which left them with money to ride out this year.

Hard to believe that GM once appeared to be so successful that there were discussions about breaking it up into several smaller companies, to give the other carmakers a chance.
