Re: Floor Mats
One of the accident in San Diego that killed 4 people was a loaner Lexus driven by a CHP officer. I find it hard to believe someone in that profession would have time to dial 911 going at 120 mph instead of shifting the thing to neutral. I'd understand if Joe Q Public does not know about the secret neutral handshake.theholycow wrote: In the time it took to call 911, I could think of and type out many options that would have done the job. The 911 operator couldn't think of those ideas either, and also didn't think to send a firetruck to slow down in front of the car.

You would be proficient enough with your phone to dial without looking.\
Also, ive concluded that you must be an absolute idiot if you get in an accident because your throttle locked up.
There are fifty different ways to slow the car. (turn it off, use cruise control cable, etc.

Re: Floor Mats
Be careful on these crazy, new-age slushboxes. Anything within the last 20 years may have electronic manglement and default to 2nd gear if you shut off the injun and then turn the ignition swish bag to the "on" position. Just be ready for that un-requested downshift.fa22raptorf22 wrote:I regularly engine off coast, manuals and slushes alike.

Re: Floor Mats
Speaking of floor mats:
I got these awesome Michelin floor mats. The bottom is covered with these big star shaped spikes. They aren't going anywhere.
However, they're a bit thick. This restricts my gas pedal to at least 1cm away from the floor if I push it all the way.
I'm wondering if this would prevent me from going WOT noticeably.
I'll probably just cut off the piece under the pedal anyway.

Re: Floor Mats
I never thought that a floor mat could jam your gas pedal. Well, you learn something new every day. I've never seen a mat with some sort of locking mechanism in the bottom nor needed one.
(Also, the steering lock in my car engages only when I remove the key, so I can safely coast with the engine turned off. But then again, when I turned off my engine on the top of the hill that leads down to our cabin, I removed the key without thinking further. Must've been a reflex...)

I did not expect to think it was even worse. I did not expect it could get worse. Holy crap...

None, that's why I asked, I never actually do it. I was just curious.Anyway, what's the hurry?
What I should have asked instead is: is there a limit to how much the throttle opens up when you push down the pedal?
I just wanted to know if that last cm would really do anything.

Knot a tissue for relatively short-duration coasting. Mower of a tissue when towing more than a little ways.theholycow wrote:I hope your automatic's oil pump is rear-driven.fa22raptorf22 wrote:I regularly engine off coast, manuals and slushes alike.

Re: Floor Mats
I've had very thick, stiff floor mats that could easily hold down a gas pedal whether it's bottom-hinge or traditional. They are usually OEM and made specifically to fit the car; they fit very securely, so if something gets caught under you may find it slightly difficult to move them or get the thing unstuck. If it's the gas pedal and you pull it up it could get mashed back down as soon as you let go.
That's still no excuse for calling 911 instead of putting it in neutral and/or killing the engine and/or steering into a ditch and/or steering into a guardrail and/or downshifting (yes, even in an auto, thought it may not go) and/or a million other things.
Rubber flame floor mats FTW!

Re: Floor Mats
Don't most cars' floormats have pegs/hooks/anchors of some sort these days?

Re: Floor Mats
Most OEM mats have pegs/hooks/anchors of some sort, and that would make it hold the gas pedal more strongly if it's designed wrong.
