Attending Catachism and Going to Mass Pays Off for VW

Volkswagen Golf R confirmed for America

Enthusiasts spoke, and Volkswagen listened. VW announced Thursday that the diminutive and powerful Golf R is coming to the United States in 2012.

VW said the Golf R will have a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a significant increase in horsepower over the 200-hp GTI.

The car will also get Haldex 4Motion all-wheel drive, a sport-tuned electronic stability program, larger brake rotors and a fortified suspension for athletic driving.

The Golf R will come in two- or four-door configurations and will have a manual transmission.

Inside are unique steering wheel and trim plus an R-model shift knob and doorsills.

From Edmunds website:
"Volkswagen Golf R Bound for U.S. in 2012
Published Dec 9, 2010
Just the Facts:
VW will bring a version of the high-performance Golf R to the U.S. in 2012.
It will be the fastest Golf production model ever sold in the U.S., VW said.
The VW has not yet been officially named.

HERNDON, Virginia — Volkswagen on Thursday said it is upping the ante with the Golf in the U.S. by bringing a version of the Europe-market Golf R here in 2012. It will be the fastest Golf production model ever sold the U.S., VW said.

Key details, such as the car's name and horsepower, are still up in the air, however.

"We're still working on the name," said Volkswagen of America spokesman Kerry Christopher in a phone conversation with Inside Line on Thursday. "There is the possibility that it could have a different name. But you can call it Golf R for now."

He said pricing has not been set either, but that it would be "competitive with the Subaru [Impreza WRX] STI." The 2011 Subaru WRX STI starts at $34,720, including a $725 destination charge.

Christopher was unable to provide exact technical specifications on the U.S. Golf R, saying that it "will have horsepower in the 270 range, but this has not been set yet, either."

In a statement, VW said the all-wheel-drive U.S. Golf R will have a "2.0-liter turbocharged engine with significant hp increase over GTI." The 2011 Golf GTI's 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 200 horsepower. The U.S. Golf R will have a six-speed manual transmission only.

It will be available in two- and four-door configurations, said Volkswagen. Other details include an upgraded sport-tuned suspension, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, unique steering wheel and interior trim, exterior R model badge and body kit, R model shift knob, R model door sills and front and rear fascia with dual exhausts.

They wouldn't put the 5 speed in that car. In VW's lineup, the 5 speed is only for cars with low purchase prices. Anything more expensive than the GTI would have to have the 6 speed.
