Rumormill: Next-gen Porsche GT3 to ditch manual transmission

"Remember simpler times when transmissions came in two flavors? Choosing a manual or an automatic was a straightforward decision: enthusiasts took the manual, commuters took the automatic. The emergence of in-between options like sequential and dual-clutch gearboxes may make it easier if you're an enthusiast who also has to commute, but what does it mean when these robotized transmissions shift faster and smoother than any set of human limbs could ever hope to?"

Blasphemy! Well they've lost my business. If the GT3 loses the manual I won't be buying one.
I couldn't afford to buy one anyway........

Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

No different than the paradigm shift that occurred when slushboxes became the quickest muscle-cars. Quicker shifts & torque converter torque multiplication were worth more than additional, closer-spaced ratios, less power loss, lighter weight, etc. Also, for bracket racing, consistency is worth it's weight in ATF.

Isn't GT3 the track- and racing-oriented version of the 911? If they're trying to maximize the car's performance, no wonder they're ditching stuff like the manual transmission in favor of new technology such as the PDK dual-clutch transmission which makes the car faster.
I wouldn't say that in these days manual is the necessarily transmission of choice for car enthusiasts - there are people who look for the technical superiority of the car instead of looking back in time. A car packed with electronics and artificial intelligence might as well be the dream of some people instead of "car-seat-ass" arrangement.
I can never afford the GT3, but the PDK as the only choice of gearbox wouldn't prevent me from getting one if I had loose money and was looking for a fast Porsche.

Raw acceleration numbers are for drag strips. Hominy times a day do you clock your car? Being involved in the driving experience is where it's at.

I just don't find enjoyment in any of these dual-clutch, slappy paddle wacky, sequential gearbox type transmissions. If it doesn't have three pedals, I'm just not that interested. Paddles are fine for kayaks or canoes....but I don't want them on my steering wheel.

I think it depends on a more detailed description of "car enthusiast" - a racing enthusiast whose first priority is winning races, or a driving enthusiast whose first priority is enjoying the drive...and then we have to further divide that into driving ethusiasts who enjoy shifting vs. those who do not.Tups wrote:I wouldn't say that in these days manual is the necessarily transmission of choice for car enthusiasts - there are people who look for the technical superiority of the car instead of looking back in time. Not to mention those who are perfectly happy with shifting using paddles vs. those who want to use their left leg as well.theholycow wrote:...we have to further divide that into driving ethusiasts who enjoy shifting vs. those who do not.
It's a difficult dilemma and I'm not entirely sure where I would place myself. Fortunately I can not afford anything but the cheapest econoboxes, which all come with stick :>

I didn't even think of that...I would group paddle/tiptronic/button-shifting drivers with non-shifting drivers since they drive with the same equipment but it's a good point.Tups wrote:Not to mention those who are perfectly happy with shifting using paddles vs. those who want to use their left leg as well.
I wish there was any category here that you could say "all come with stick" about...while a lot of sticks here are econoboxes, not a lot of econoboxes (or anything else) are sticks. It's a difficult dilemma and I'm not entirely sure where I would place myself. Fortunately I can not afford anything but the cheapest econoboxes, which all come with stick :>

Re: Rumormill: Next-gen Porsche GT3 to ditch manual transmis
The GT3 is designed for the track, so it makes sense for Porsche to go with the PDK transmission only. OTOH, it would be a dark day to see Porsche drop the manual from the Boxster, Cayman, or base 911, as those cars are more about the overall driving experience. That would be like Mazda making the Miata with only an automatic.
FWIW, there's a guy in my neighborhood offering his lightly used manual GT3 for sale at a steep discount from sticker; he's basically giving it away.
