That's not a new idea, that's obsolete technology. Watch videos of people shifting with two sticks...

It's not parallel transmissions, though, it's serial. For parallel transmissions like a DCT you'd need two clutch pedals...and you'd have to heel-toe them, or get a hand throttle.

Yeah, I had assumed it had existed before, just didn't actually do any research. <-- Lazy.

They needed to put in an idler gear to reverse the rotational direction and instead of being just an extra cost to them, Mitsubishi turned it into a marketing asset by adding a 2nd ratio to choose from. It wasn't like low range on a SUV transfer case - not that much of a difference in ratio between the two choices, but an appreciated choice toward optimizing for performance or economy. Effectively, there were really only 7 distinct ratios, not 8, since two of the choices virtually overlapped.

Hmm...if you were in Economy mode, and you were going to downshift to pass someone, would you downshift to 3rd and then select Power mode?Rope-Pusher wrote:

I imagine it's not a shift-on-the-fly transfer case...prolly have to be stopped or under 20mph or something.
