Cadillac CTS 3.6 Loses Manual Transmission For 2012

Post by Standardshifter »

Cars like Cadillac’s 556 HP, rear-drive, manual transmission-equipped CTS-V SportWagon are the kind of offering that enthusiasts lust after, even if a relative “value-price” of $70k-ish keeps it in aspirational territory. And by offering a CTS “Performance Edition” with the option of mating a six-speed manual to GM’s well-liked 3.6 liter V6, Cadillac gives enthusiasts an appealing opportunity to bask in some of the V’s reflected glory. But apparently not many enthusiasts are interested in pursuing this opportunity, as InsideLine reports that the manual transmission option will be dropped from the 2012 CTS 3.6.

Looks like a big shift (a booo) for 2012; lots of cars that had offered manuals, even if they were few and far between, are being dropped for 2012.

To hell with it, just buy a Camaro instead...or if you really need to spend the money, get the CTS-V.

As long as the CTS-V keeps the manual, I can swallow this news. The day when the CTS-V loses the manual is the day we die.

I wasn't going to ever own one - do I still have to die?

We will all die, since the CTS-V losing manual would mean the end of days.

I hope to just go to bed and wake up dead some day - but not any time soon.

Not that it was an actual enthusiast car or anything, but I think the Camry also dropped manuals across the line for 2012.

Meh...no big loss. Although I do hate to hear that ANY manual trans option disappeared. Didn't someone say that Ferrari no longer offers a true manual transmission on any new car? That's really no big loss either.

Sad news.

BMW dropped the manual trans. option on its new 5 series 528i model ... auto-only. You can still get a 6-speed on the 535i, 550i however.

You'd think BMW, who is known for being a driver's car, would keep the thing that people who care a lot about driving want... at least in most cars.

Pfft. I doubt most of BMW's customer base even know what a manual transmission is. Hell, most of them didn't even know their cars were RWD.

I'd bet that BMW sells a higher percentage of manual transmission vehicles than most other mainstream manufacturers. I mean, it's obvious that automatics will outsell manuals by a large margin, but I'm saying that BMW probably sells quite a few manuals compared to the other car companies.

The percentage of BMWs 3-series sold with a manual is barely 11% (all 3 series are available with a manual except for the 335d diesel). Regarding the 5-series I mentioned, the manual take rate is just 6%:
http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=418638

Porsche is the highest % of cars sold with a manual, over 50% I think.
I had to custom-order my BMW with a manual. Dealer ran a search for me and found a grand total of three 335i coupes with a manual east of the Mississippi. Not much of a market for them anymore ...

In related news, when I signed the papers for my BMW, the manual was standard and the auto was a few hundred more. In March, they increased the base price of the car by several hundred to subsidize the cost of the auto, which is now a no-cost option.
