Bosch eClutch

Postby bk7794 » Mon Sep 02, 2013 7:19 pm

In low-speed situations, namely first and second gear, the eClutch is capable of working the clutch without input from the driver. Of course the driver still needs to move the shifter, but it does take out some of the legwork when sitting in traffic.

I did not see this anywhere on here.

Clutch by wire has arrived.

Sounds dreadful.

Isn't this how dual-clutch transmissions work? They're just bringing it to conventional manuals it seems.

I thought DCTs worked by 1 of the 2 clutches controlling gears 1-3-5 and the clutch controlling gears 2-4-6.

Well, maybe SOMEWHERE the eCLUTCH is less expensive than a slushbox, but in North America, thanks to the economies of scale, slushbox's cost less to provide than Amish transmissions. That isn't to say that they don't command a premium in the marketplace, just that the vehicle manufacturer pays more for the components and labor associated with an Amish transmission.

Dual-clutch transmissions are a subset of automated manual transmissions. All automated manual transmissions work this way.

Well, as much as I don't WANT clutch-by-wire, it's probably the best shot the true manual has at sticking around. This has the potential to dramatically increase parts commonality between variants, essentially providing a manual mode for an SMG or DSG. The people who already don't know what the third pedal is for probably wouldn't want it to be there, but changing out modular pedal quadrants and shift quadrants would be pretty painless for the manufacturer.
