Sonofabiscuit. I like the Escape too, but think it's offered with a manual, although I've heard that the 1.6 turbo offers one. I wouldn't want to try and deal with a turbo though. Are there any other options that I could look at in several years?

If Olie were in better shape, he has 16 year old car issues - most of which probably aren't worth addressing at this point - I would seriously think about it. Oh, and a more efficient engine. 15 is fine for some, but not for me (full time).

I'm pretty up in the air right now as I have no concrete plans to buy anything, but the only things that seem vaguely in my price range range are a couple Superpoos and the FJ Cruiser.

A Superwhat? You have several stick-SUV options within the FJ Cruiser's price range (from Subaru, Mazda, VW, Nissan, Jeep), although it's anyone's guess what will be available in a few years when you're ready to buy.

I'll definitely be on the lookout when my lease is up. I still haven't decided if I want to buy it out, or go for something different. I keep waffling back and forth.

My 2002 GMC is a slushbox but it is very good at choosing the right gear, doesn't hunt, is generally well-behaved.

I also found the automatic on my 2001 Silverado was decent. I like that it doesn't downshift on every slight incline. I'll sometimes back off the throttle to prevent it.

I looked a long time for an older full size 4WD pickup with a standard shift, almost impossible to find locally. Seems like the trend toward automatics in pickup trucks started years ago.

Apparently when my in-laws were dating/engaged, my mother-in-law had a Beetle. It was having some issues so my father-in-law rebuilt it over a day. When a car is that small and relatively simple, apparently that's not too difficult. I feel like InlinePaul would want one.

They're not totally good cars for Michigangsters. On one hand, heating and defrosting leave something tubey desired. On the other hand, they have slick bottoms (!!!!) with engine over the drive wheels, so they don't tend to get stuck in the snow and you have 5 other fingers.
