Audi's new transmission: Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG)

Post by Standardshifter »

"Technically speaking, this DSG (for Direct-Shift Gearbox) is even more interesting. DSG has an electrohydraulic clutch for automanual operation. Like similar boxes from Ferrari and BMW, it has six forward speeds shifted manually via paddles on the steering wheel or by toggling the gear selector. Yet DSG introduces a twist designed to go the competition one better. It has two separate clutches with discs packaged concentrically, one inside the other. It also has two input shafts—one solid and one hollow, wrapped around the other—taking three gears each (first, third and fifth; and second, fourth and sixth). The end game? DSG allows two gears to be engaged simultaneously, with overlap for a fraction of a second during shifts. "
