Anyone here from DC area?

Post by eaglecatcher »

I'll be in DC at the end of June for like 10 days or something for a Convention thing, if there's anyone in that area that wants to meet up for lunch or something I"d be glad to see if I could skip a lecture or something. Lemme know if anyone is from that region (George Washington University to be specific)

DC is NOT south! It is mid-atlantic.

I live in northern virginia, basically you could say DC.

Fact: The Mason-Dixon line delineates North and South.
Fact: DC is south of the Mason-Dixon

Washington DC was the capital of the Union during the civil war. Maryland, which surrounds DC, never seceded from the Union. Virginia did, so if you want to be technical, then the south starts in Virginia. But you can't define North and South simply geographically, because you have to look at the modern DC metro area as a whole. And northern virginia is not distinct from the DC suburbs of southern maryland.

Also, the closest southern city of note to DC is Richmond, which is farther away than Baltimore, which was always a northern city. Therefore DC is on the border between north and south, and you could say that the South starts at Alexandria, which is 5 miles south of DC. But really the transition is gradual as you move from Richmond to Philadelphia, putting DC neither in the north nor in the south. Hence Mid-Atlantic.

I agree DC is Mid Atlantic, but there is no Mid Atlantic section here!

Given there is no Mid Atlantic forum, I revert to the mason dixon line rule.

I agree Virginia is the south but northern virignia can also be considered Mid Atlantic since it is part of the DC metro area.

The DC area does have some southern influence, but I wouldn't consider DC "the south." Southern influence is apparent in the outer suburbs of VA, and even southern Maryland.

All this could be solved if SS added a Mid Atlantic forum!
