i always thought chicagoland was a term made up by people from that area as an informal nickname (like potown or pk for poughkeepsie or chilangolandia for mexico city), but then i saw it on a map tonight at b&n .

Boston's got Bo-town (rare), the Hub, the City on the Hill, the Walking City, Beantown (most common).AHTOXA wrote:Chicago is the only town that gets to get away with that.

I dont quite get the point of making the name longer as the nickname though. Silly Chicago(land).

Chicagoland is really not a nickname for the city, it's a way to describe the area. The area of the city and the nearing burbs.watkins wrote:Boston's got Bo-town (rare), the Hub, the City on the Hill, the Walking City, Beantown (most common).AHTOXA wrote:Chicago is the only town that gets to get away with that.

You don't really say I'm going to go visit Chicagoland. But you do say that an ice storm is going to hit Chicagoland. That way people understand that we're all screwed, not just the city.
