Also, was it me, or did he purposely take it easy his first run. The second run didn't last long, obviously, but I felt that he was definitely more aggressive with the driving. I like watching videos like these.

His first run seemed like he was just trying to feel things out. Seeing what gear he should keep and how late he could brake. My justification for that conjecture would be based on his second run, despite it being short, looked much more aggressive. I would argue that, had he not had an accident, that he probably would have gone faster.
With regard to damage, I'd say that he probably damaged the engine. It sounded like it was spinning in the red zone during that possible mis-shift.
