Quality of roads
Quality of roads
I've noticed that roads in Brisbane seem to be far inferior to those in Canberra and Melbourne.

Read an article in the news down here recently where some wannabe American car thieves were thwarted by a cars manual transmission when they tried to drive off - they couldn't start it!jomotopia wrote:primarily North American actually, probably b/c everywhere in else in the world manual transmissions aren't such an inconvenient mystery.

Tropical heat and rain take their toll on asphalt. We have the same bad road problem in Puerto Rico which is at a latitude - though in the northern hemisphere - comparable to the Townsville-Cairns area of North-Central Queensland.

France has some of the best roads I've ever seen. Far superior to those I saw in the UK. The autoroutes are like glass. THere's not a single pothole or groove or anything.

Well, at least I can comfort myself knowing that somewhere it's worse than here. The roads in Rhode Island, USA look positively civilized by comparison.

Some Finnish roads are also in pretty bad shape because we use studded winter tires.

There comes some grooves on the road, and when tarmac gets this it sometimes brakes, but usually when they get in too bad shape the roat is coated with new layer of tarmac

Re: Quality of roads
But then again if they're short on money and the road is not a major highway, they'll usually send one guy to shovel some tarmac to the worst holes instead of re-surfacing the whole road. My friend did that when he was working on Destia. Those emergency repairs won't last long and afterwards the road is in even worse shape than before.mad_finn wrote:There comes some grooves on the road, and when tarmac gets this it sometimes brakes, but usually when they get in too bad shape the roat is coated with new layer of tarmac
Have you tried the second-newest stretch of freeway between Paimio and Muurla? Kinda bumpy, isn't it. On the other hand the old freeway near Helsinki has always been smooth. I guess there has been some negative developement in the building quality...
Of course in general roads in Finland are in pretty good shape. Cambodia was rather interesting couple of years ago. A 100 km trip took nearly six hours.
