Oh yeah, there's no question that total demand is higher for automatics, but the supply:demand ratio is worse for manuals.
Also, I'm pretty sure automatics do indeed deliver much better profit margin. Economy of scale most likely makes automatics cheaper to build; it certainly makes them much cheaper to support (i.e. warranty claims)...yet they usually cost more.
