I'm looking at a V8 swap for my car and it makes me kinda wanna go loud so I can enjoy the sound, but because I'm not a douche I refuse to inflict it upon everyone else (also don't want to draw police attention; and not sure I'd want it loud all the time anyway). I might consider cutouts though...flip a switch/pull a lever and it bypasses most of the exhaust system, perfect for occasional use where nobody would be bothered.

You could just do what some new cars are doing and artificially create engine sound and play it through the speakers. That's close enough, right?!?

(Please don't do this. That was not serious.)

Was that vacuum powered cutouts? I had no idea they had anything other than lever-linkage manual cutouts at that time.

They were mechanical - pull-knob under instrument panel was connected to a cable that operated the exhaust cut-out.

Attended the Orphan car show in Ypsilanti this last Sunday
Great show - I'll plan to attend again.

The Frazer Vagabond "utility sedan," arguably among the first production hatchbacks ever built. - See more at: http://autoweek.com/article/classic-car ... 3wpja.dpuf

One thing bothers me....took me about a day of consideration for it to get pooped out:
As the cars came past the reviewing stands, the panel of folks that were former "Perts" seemed to always be mentioning about the great engineering and styling accomplishments on these cars, how for only a small amount of tooling money, their manufacturers had adroitly updated them so they appeared to be keeping up with the Joneses, but really under the skin they were not keeping up with the competition. This was evidenced not just in the bodies, but also in the engines - when they couldn't afford to design and tool for a V8 engine, they added a supercharger to the L6.

I got to thinking - that's how Chrysler was when they just came out of bankruptcy in the early '80s. Their vehicle lineup was based on shared transaxles and L4 engines and they turbocharged the engines rather than design, tool up, and develop a V6.

On one hand, making something out of nothing is to be admired, but is it any wonder it is a common trait among automobile brands that became orphans? They all had one foot in the grave, right?

Saw a Porsche 918 Spyder in the flesh yesterday. Looked like a million bucks. Sorry, no photos, no clutch...
