"ignition switch might turn off...disabling the seatbelts and airbags". Seatbelts? Disabling the seatbelts? Do they vaporize with the key off? Or are we just talking some minor added feature like explosive pretensioners?

I still find it kinda iffy that airbags are shut off with the ignition switch. The radio isn't shut off until you open the door, for crap's sake. What if your throttle is stuck and, since you have a traditional ignition switch that you know how to operate under pressure in an emergency, you kill the engine? You'll need airbags until the car stops.

Rope, I'm serious here, crashworthiness devices should remain operational as long as the car is in motion because of the stuck throttle thing (even if protecting occupants from being hit while parked is not important). Is this an idea that you can send up the chain of command and share with your engineer peers at other manufacturers? Retained accessory power to keep the radio on until the door opens costs almost nothing, and this is the same circuit, just hooked up to the VSS (well, to an ECM output programmed to watch the VSS anyway).

I've got a best friend who's an entry-level emissions engineer at VW, I'm going to give the same suggestion to him.

In spite of being classified as "Safety Items", solid rocket propellant exhaust-filled bags aren't very safe things to have in a car. If one, or two, were ever to go off while you were half-way out of your seat, it might cause a medical catastrophe. In fact, it is always a point that they are not "Armed" until crossing the vehicle threshold speed where injuries from a collision without the bag deployment would be greater than injuries the bag may cause - to a driver or passenger seated in the tray-table-up, seatback in the upright position. Feet up on the dashboard or hanging out the window and owl beds are off.

It can also cost the price of a new left testicle to repair the vehicle after a bag deployment - a financial catastrophe.

So they really don't want to risk them going off when they aren't needed to protect vehicle occupants. I bet the space shuttle solid boosters weren't armed until T-Minus 10 seconds.

Ok, so an occupancy sensor for the driver's side, just like the passenger's side, would be necessary if it was to operate while the car is not moving. What about keeping the system operational while the vehicle is in motion, regardless of ignition switch position?

Styling and the experimental car.
Interesting to see the roots of adjustable controls, NAV systems, cruise control, etc.
