modifying stock transmission

Post by sen2two »

Hi, this is my first post here. maybe someone could help me out?

I have a 1990 Mazda Rx7 and the stock Turbo 5 speed tranny is usually good up to 500 whp. but i have heard of people modifying them for fast clutchless shifting. From what i could find, people have removed some or all of the syncros and up to 3/4 of the dog clutchs...? does this sound right?

I cant find any real info on this, but im thinking maybe someone here would know, or point me in the right direction...

taking synchros out of a synchronized transmission does not make it a dog box. synchronized transmissions have alot of tiny teeth, that can't handle much torque (compared to a dog box). a dog box uses higher grade materials, few very big teeth, and no synchronizers to accomplish very fast shifting.

go here to get a good transmission for your car. you don't want to pull shit out of a tranny, especially out of a synchrobox. why do you think the synchros are there in the first place? they can't handle gear changes like dog boxes

Hey there's a name I recognize. I go by 'need RX7' on all the rotary forums, you should post your badass RHD conversion over here :P .

As far as the transmission thing goes, I can't really help you. I haven't looked into it much, since I can't envision myself getting out of sub-200 hp n/a's any time soon .

Probably safer and more worthwhile just to do a complete swap out to a dogbox.
