ah ok so i miss understood the question... i think it's also important for people to learn manual and also familarize with automatc (P,R,N,D,L,2) you know so the person will be flexsable in driving any car

what overdrive does is basically it has the same effect on an auto ,as it would on a stick if u were to go from 3rd to 5th... basically bogs the engine down so it doesnt have to rev so high to keep speed,
If i drive my mazda navajo around at 45mph in "D" the motor runs about 2600RPM, But when i shift it to overdrive(D with an O around it) it drops from that 2600RPM down to a nice 1200RPM,
out on the highway, at 85mph, in "D" It runs 4300RPM, Shift it into "OD" drops to 2900RPM
