The LTD was exactly the sort of old iron that the Taurus was designed to be the antithesis of.
Good point, and the sedan was definitely in many ways a departure from the LTD (though I actually liked the LTD).
Also, it would totally not make sense for the sedan and wagon to be so fundamentally different as to have RWD vs. FWD; that includes mounting the engine in different directions and everything. I can't imagine a reason why they wouldn't give it a different model name.
It could've been marketing. The kind of people who wanted the wagon aren't necessarily the same as those who went for the sedan.

No RWD Tauri. Wagons may have had unique rear suspension, to allow for more cargo, but now RWD.
With AWD or 4WD, the components are usually not durable enough at the "Wrong" end to consider full time operation from the "Wrong" end. "Wrong" end being the set of wheels that were not powered in the original configuration.
