There's a lever inside under the dash on the left to pop the hood... then you lift the release lever under the middle of the hood to raise it.

In the past week I've replaced the spark plugs, wires, oxygen sensor (needed to be replaced anyway), and cleaned the EGR valve. Nothing I tried seemed to fix it. I might try cleaning the MAF sensor and replacing the fuel filter and thermostat whenever I have enough money.

I'll be checking for vacuum leaks and testing the fuel pump and injectors too.
Have you checked valves, lifters etc? How's the oil holding up? The 91 Tercel I almost bought was losing oil due to stuck lifters.

My Miata was using quite a bit of oil and had loud lifter tick sometimes, especially when the oil was getting near time to change.

Seafoam in the crankcase helped quite a bit.

I took 3rd gear up to redline repeatedly last week and that seemed to clear up the engine pinging. I'm also switching to 10W30 (was using 5W30) to help with the oil consumption.

Not sure if changing to 10w30 is the best idea, though it will probably help with oil consumption. Have you tried a high mileage oil like Valvoline MaxLife? That used to help a lot in my Civic and Accord. Not sure how the newer MaxLife is, since it's now a synthetic blend instead of full dino oil with additives.

I'll second that -- stick with the right viscosity rating, and get a "High Mileage" oil. If your engine isn't designed to move thicker oil around, it may not move the oil well enough.

Lots of cars are marked with the proper oil weight on the oil cap. Your 1992 Tercel probably takes 5w-30. You could email Toyota or ask a Toyota dealer service department.

it doesnt matter. cant go wrong with 5w30

im running rotella T 5w40 in mine, good cold viscoucity and thick enough to lubricate at high rpms and high heat. probably gonna run 0w50 in my turbo engine or if i yank and refresh my engine this summer.

The only reason I'm reviving this thread is because I'm drunk off my ass. I have no valid reason to use 5W30 since I moved back south. It doesn't get cold enough here. I still have engine knock and I'm switching to 10W30 sometime this week. I use the cheapest oil too. You know what? My car can handle it. I do have a stuck lifter but I don't care right now.

Ok no more drunk postings tonight. I can see daylight through my bedroom window and I have a f**k exam tomorrow.
