From what I understand, there's a bushing in each of the rear hubs that is designed to deform a certain way during turns to add toe to the rear wheels, thus using the rear wheels to 'steer'. I've heard that when functioning correctly the system is kind of unpredictable, and when the bushings are old and torn up (as most are by now) it gets worse. It's a pretty common mod to replace the specialized bushings with conventional ones.

I was aware of the system but didn't realize that it produces unpredictable results. In that case, carry on. Image

I set up my 20 ton press and already pressed out one of the rear hubs.

These bearings could have done 100k more miles, easily!

Really, the balls (lol) and races don't look too bad, but the fact that the metal dust cover is all rusted and ruffled, and was detached before pressing began, is a little disconcerting.

Only 100k? Those could've been million-milers easy.

Blast! I'm can't find an appropriate tool to push the bearing out the rest of the way. The base of my 54mm socket worked for the first 3/4" or so, but then the shoulder of the socket contacts the bearing carrier and can't push anymore.

Y U NO CLEAN RUSTY CRUD?

Did you end up figuring out a tool? Sounds like a slightly different socket, maybe a modified one, or a piece of black pipe might do.

Yeah, I ended up finding a long 36mm socket that worked like a charm. I'll have to post a picture of the giant c-clip you have to remove to get the bearing out.

^ Argh, I managed to get that one off with a modified pair of needle nose pliers, but the second one is being a whoreslut. I might have to go buy the correct tool (gasp!).

Also, pressing bushings out of control arms is a bitch. The pressing is only .01% of the effort, the rest is trying to position the piece in a way that will present the bushing to the ram without anything else getting in the way. In many cases this is nearly impossible. I'm going to need to pick up various pieces of round and square stock to come up with ways to get this done.

The nice thing about the correct tool is that it's better for the job than grinding needlenose pliers into an improvised tool. What sucks is that, once you buy the tool, it's never where you can find it. You buy it, use it once, then put it away. The next time you need to use it, where the hell is it? Then you're back to grinding needlenose pliers and prying with a screwdriver.
