Keep in mind that we use a different octane rating. 98-octane in RON is just 93-octane in AKI, the system used in the US.

Yeah, the sticker on my bike would indicate it should have premium to the uninitiated, but it is supposed to take good old 87 on the (R+M)/2 scale.

Forgive the off-topicness, but what kind of bike do you have?IMBoring25 wrote:Yeah, the sticker on my bike would indicate it should have premium to the uninitiated, but it is supposed to take good old 87 on the (R+M)/2 scale.

93 is what turbo cars use though. i've never seen a non-turboed car require anything more than 87Tups wrote:Keep in mind that we use a different octane rating. 98-octane in RON is just 93-octane in AKI, the system used in the US.

A lot of naturally aspirated cars require premium gas. Jaguar X-Type and XK8, BMWs, etc.

Exactly. Anything performance oriented and/or with high compression will use 93 octaneElectroGhandi wrote:A lot of naturally aspirated cars require premium gas. Jaguar X-Type and XKR, BMWs, etc.

As I might have explained before, the engine in my car was originally designed to run on 97-octane (RON) leaded gasoline. However, since it is no longer available, I use the next best thing, which happens to be 98-octane gasoline and lead replacement additive. Using a fuel with smaller octane rating would result in knocking.
Keep in mind that the regular gasoline sold here has an octane rating of 95 RON or 90-91 AKI. "99+"-octane premium, which would be 93-94+ in AKI, is also readily available. Couple of days ago I also saw a gas station that sold RE85, which has an anti-knock index of 100-105.
