mad_finn, I'll keep your offer in mind since I live only an hour's drive away at the moment and much closer after September.

LHOswald, even if buttsecks is commonplace when you meet other forum members, it doesn't mean that everyone does it.

The first generation of North American Escort and the aforementioned Mercury Lynx looked pretty much like the European Mk3, but they didn't share components apart from the 1.6-liter Ford CVH engine which was tuned down for American market. According to the Wikipedia articles both models sold pretty well, but I guess most have since disappeared from the roads. It's hard to imagine how a car not unlike mine would be popular in today's America.

Apparently the Escort has developed a leak in the joint between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe. I'll have to address it before the yearly inspection, but before that the only problem is that I'll wake everyone up when I come home late in the evening. It's a bit noisy especially under load.

...and now it's undriveable because of the noise and the danger of the exhaust pipe falling. The pipe connecting the exhaust manifold to the rest of the system has rusted through before the collar or whatever (in the following picture) and the hole becomes bigger every time I press the gas pedal because tiny pieces of rust fly away. f**k great.

edit: mad_finn, do you know the Finnish name of the part I have to change. Is it front pipe (etuputki)?

^ I SNAGGED MY EXHAUST DRIVING THROUGH A TEMPORARY PARKING LOT GOING TO A RED WINGS GAME, PULLING THE COLLECTOR OFF THE HEADER TUBES AND BENDING UP THE TAILPIPE SUCH THAT I COULD NOT MAKE THE TWO PIECES MEET AGAIN. I SUPPORTED THE PIPE WITH COATHANGER WIRE AND DROVE IT HOME THAT WAY, SHUTTING IT OFF DOWN THE BLOCK AND COASTING UP TO THE HOUSE. I FIXED IT THE NEXT DAY AND BRAZED THE COLECTOR TO THE HEADER, so I wouldn't have to type in caps all my life.

"pakoputken ensimmäinen osa" but are you sure you have to change it... or is it possible to weld it shut? or is the rest of the exhaust pipes first 1/3rd in too bad shape to revive anymore?

I checked Motonet's list and for my make and model there's "etuputki", "väliosa" and "takapönttö". I changed the rest of the exhaust pipe (from that point onwards) couple of years ago, so the section between the exhaust manifold and the rest of the pipe is an original one and now needs to be changed as well. Since the manifold usually lasts for the lifetime of the engine, I guess I won't have to touch the exhaust ever again.

I thought about welding a piece of new pipe there but a new part costs around 30 euros and welding a pipe rusted to paper thin... well, at least I would know where it would break next! Of course the changing will cost a bit but then again I don't know people nearby who could do that for me so I'd have to take it to a shop anyway.

Anyway, I booked service time for next Thursday. It's the same small shop that fixed the engine for my friend's French disaster couple of years ago (another shop swapped the transmission and failed). My mom's friend also uses it since it's quite cheap and, more importantly, is quite close to my parents' place so I don't have to wake the whole town when I'm taking the car there. It might take couple of days until the parts arrive but I'll leave the car there since I don't want to drive it more than absolutely necessary. If the pipe fails, the rest of the exhaust pipe falls to the ground and twists under the car.

Consider preemptively securing the exhaust pipe with a piece of wire so it doesn't hit the ground if the cracked section fails completely. It is cheap insurance against further damage.

^I've heard of RWD drive shaft universal joint breaking at front end and driveshaft falls to pavement and jams into the road, which pole-vaults the car into the air. Many racing classes require "Safety Tubes" to restrain broken driveshafts from hitting the roadway. I don't think most exhaust pipes, especially old, rusty ones, are strong enough to cause such problems.
