Check out my Lincoln, in Lincoln NE!

Post by ihartmacz »

I got a bargain on Craigslist for this 1991 Lincoln Continental ($250). I am going to park the Mustang for the winter and drive this little bastard when it starts getting bad outside. I already love it; it runs pretty well. Brand new tune up (new wires, cap, rotor, and plugs), new tires, and a tape deck adapter for MP3 players... NICE

It's got the same 3.8L V6 that's in in my Mustang (no electronic ignition), so how can I go wrong. My Mustang is one dependable bitch.

The bad:
-ABS doesn't work
-Rusty
-Auto tranny (works well!!!)

The gauges look better than that, it's the phone's camera.

I love this interior...

Can't be. No way it's got points and condenser. My 1980 Buick has electronic ignition. It's not a modern distributorless computer-controlled electronic ignition, but it's not like we're dealing with a magneto. AFAIK everything since the 1970s has electronic ignition.

Convert it to RWD and put an LS1 in it.

Looks like it would make a great beater, though. Hell of a deal.

Wait, it's fail-wheel drive? I didn't know that. I retract my statement about it being easier to convert. I don't know how to do it for FWD.

I should have said the Lincoln has no DIS.

I remember working on a VW Scirocco from the late 70's and it still used poince-n-condescenders and a carburetor with a non-functional float valve (well, maybe they ALL didn't have non-functional float valves, but this one did. Fuel overflowed the float chamber and splashed on top of the closed throttle plates at idle.

I don't like carburetors, I think they suck.

Yeah, I should have been more clear. The Lincoln doesn't have points, it has a new style distributor with an external coil. It also has one of those external starter relays. Damn old fashioned Ford. It will be so reliable. I wish it had DIS, but it doesn't.

Today my mom said: "I would trust a Chevy to start when it's cold more than a Ford. Just saying..." I gave her a weird look because it was just something I wouldn't expect a Jeep girl to say... I'm expecting good reliability out of this car. It runs smoothly and has a ton of response, doesn't leak coolant, new tune up, new struts all around, and tons of tune-up stuff.

So, the car originally came with air-ride, but the previous owner put conventional struts on all four corners! He said that the 1993s had the option of conventional struts or air ride. :-D

Word!

What are the advantages of an internal solenoid? Like an external clutch slave cylinder, an external starter solenoid is much easier and cheaper to replace...but unlike an internal clutch slave, I can't guess the advantage of an internal starter solenoid.

What is DIS? Distributorless Ingition System?

My first car was a beat-up Cadillac that had air ride. Sometimes a "Car is leveling" light would illuminate on the dash and sometimes I could hear the compressor running but it never actually worked.

I rerouted the air lines to schraeder valves in the trunk and pumped them full of fix-a-flat as preventative measure, then went to the gas station to air up. I got the rear of the car way up in the air. Then I left the gas station and went down into the street, as the lot there was raised. As the rear wheels hit bottom the stuff went "SPLAT"...leaving a puddle of fix-a-flat on the road and my car's rear end sagging once again.

MASSIVE pet peeve. Its not a solenoid. Its an obese relay. Solenoids convert electricity to mechanical action.
