Wouldn't work, engine's too smooth.
Too smooth? Of course it's too smooth, it doesn't run, right?

If you find the replacement engine is also too smooth, try giving it a vacuum leak. I bet you could rug up something that is tuneable for just the right amount of leakage to give you that great pockety-pockety sound at idle.

Sure, whistling to simulate a turbo spooling up, but you still need to get the idle sounds right.

Oh, and put a little diesel in the muffler to get the aroma and the particulates correct.

Today has been a long, exciting day. Left around 11:45 to go get the trailer, after forgetting the tow chain and jumper cables, we made it out on the road to Fremont at about 12:30. Couldn't find the fuel pump relay, so we couldn't get the engine started, so all four of us were behind it pushing as hard as we could (giggity). Eventually, we reached an expected point where we couldn't push it anymore, so we hooked the front tow eyelet to the truck and tugged it onto the trailer. Drove it home, put it next to the driveway, and proceeded to go to town on it. Cleaned off the horrendously worn paint, put some fresh painters tape on the window that won't go up, and made a video. Got out the pressure washer, sprayed industrial strength degreaser all over the place, and sprayed the engine bay clean. Then dad came home with some armorall cleaner, and got the interior cleaned up, pulled out 20 years of garbage from under the rear seat (pics to follow), got it cleaned off, and put it back together. It no longer smells like smoke for the most part (getting a rug cleaner tomorrow), and it feels very German and executive-y. I like it.

Story of what I found:
All 20 years of crap under the seat, someone's mom owned this thing.

Even found a set of keys! Must've been to some house, she was a realtor (found about a trillion of her cards under the seat).

And a quick lo-def tour. I got my new 720p pocket cam working again, so I'll take a new one tomorrow. Got too dark.

So, dad went and bought a new battery this morning, in the process of removing the battery tray so we could treat the rust on it, we damaged an o-ring on the washer reservoir, causing it to leak washer fluid all down the street, and we also found that the washer reservoir has a coil that has hot engine coolant pumped through it so that when it's cold as tits outside, your washer fluid will thaw. Got the battery tray all treated and painted, dropped in the new battery, and it cranks like crazy, but no spark. (FFFFFUUUUU-) I smell gas, the fuel pump is humming, but I think dad may have fuxxord the coil when he hit it with 1750PSI of water without the cover on it, which we found sitting about a foot away from it.

Would you wash yourself with 1750 PSI water? Shirley you shouldn't wash a new baby like that!

Just went out and did a test. The coil's potentially still good, just no power to it.

In its old and nasty condition, that still looks cleaner than anything I've ever owned, even when it was brand new.
