A New Accord
I mentioned on here the other day I might be taking over my Mom's 03 Accord if my sister got a new car. Now, I didn't expect it to happen so soon, but it happened. I'm emailing my sister this afternoon as she's visiting the Honda dealer to test drive Accords, Civics and CR-Vs and she all of the sudden asks me if I want to trade in my 96 Accord. I'm like yeah, why not. Didn't realize I would be cleaning the car out and driving out to Danbury within 2 hours . Sister was tempted by the new 2012 Civic which just arrived at dealers but, spec'd out the way she likes, it would cost more than an '11 Accord SE which is a more substantial and bigger car. I didn't make a lot of money on the 96 Accord (only $500 trade-in, and probably only because sister had a coupon for it) but at least now I don't have to worry about getting it ready to sell and/or doing more repairs on it. Now, the way it works is my mom takes over the 07 Accord my sister has been driving, and I take over the 03 Accord Mom had (which used to be sister's)...now for some pictures :
so long good friend
next victim...bwahahahaha
my new friend (grey 03 accord lx):
sister's new toy (2011 accord se):
she likes it!!
not the nicest rearend...
old meets new (blue 07 SE goes to Mom):

Re: A New Accord
I see your family is very loyal to the brand.
That 2003 should be a very nice car for you. Is it the 4-cyl or 6? I had a 4-cyl and it was always more than peppy enough for me. In hindsight I should have kept it, but dumb decisions seem to run in my family. I wish I could go back to last summer so I could tell myself not trade it in, but alas I did and no longer have it.
Should be lots of fun, and if it's the 4-cyl you'll have the timing chain instead of a belt which should help durability and you shouldn't have to deal with the grenading transmissions that I've heard about in the 6-cylinder models.
Have fun in your "new" car.

Re: A New Accord
So:
Sister gets new car
Mom gets '07 that sister had
You get '03 that mom had
Sister gets lame $500 trade-in from your '96
Well, congrats. Pretty cool that everybody's taste in cars is compatible.
What was wrong with your car that it only fetched $500?

A lot of people probably had a car they should have kept. I should have kept my first car...if only I was half as good at fixing stuff as I am now...tankinbeans wrote:In hindsight I should have kept it

Re: A New Accord
Keeps car payments down, and with the cars staying in the family everybody knows what has and has not been with the car. I personally wouldn't buy/take a car over from a relative due to the possible event that something goes catastrophically wrong.theholycow wrote:So:

I'm slowly learning the basics of mechanical repair. No engine overhauls, kthxbye. I'm primarily learning brakes, struts, and other relatively simple things. I'm going to be doing a brake-job on my mom's Pontiac and my brother's Toyota fairly quickly. My car, on the other hand, will be serviced by the dealer the hole time I have it, or until the warranty runs out in 10 years more likely 7 because I tend to drive more than I think I do.

Re: A New Accord
yeah, i got my sister into the hondas way back when and the rest is history. we had an old beat-up 93 accord a decade ago and i think that got her to start liking hondas (more than toyotas), despite that car's problems. my sister also likes the way honda dealers treat her in general (with a few exceptions), especially danbury honda where she got this '11 accord and the 07 too. i could probably write a book just putting into words how our family went from american to japanese cars...tankinbeans wrote:I see your family is very loyal to the brand.
thanks, it's the 4-banger. i agree it is peppy. even when i had my maxima, i thought the accord was plenty powerful. That 2003 should be a very nice car for you. Is it the 4-cyl or 6? I had a 4-cyl and it was always more than peppy enough for me...
does it really have a chain?? that's great as here i thought it was overdue for a timing belt change (101k miles). the 96 accord was due for its second t-belt change. i left the service history in the pocket behind the passenger seat in case one of the honda employees is actually interested in fixing it up . i bet it's getting turned into a metal brick at the junkyard as we speak...Should be lots of fun, and if it's the 4-cyl you'll have the timing chain instead of a belt which should help durability and you shouldn't have to deal with the grenading transmissions that I've heard about in the 6-cylinder models. Re: A New Accord
where to start...it's 16 years old, CEL is on for at least 3 different things, ABS gone, driver side windows gone, suspension going, alignment off, axles clicking, wheel bearings probably shot, tires are only a year old but each corner has different air-holding characteristics (one always goes down to 20 psi within a couple of weeks, another one goes way up to like 46 psi, one holds air well and the other loses a little ), timing belt is overdue, it's old...theholycow wrote:What was wrong with your car that it only fetched $500?
edit: forgot to actually answer your question. they didn't even really inspect the car. my sister had a coupon to get at least 500 trade-in for any honda (might've been any car). since a 96 accord in anything short of great condition would go either to the auction block (if it's lucky), jorge's son out back, or to the metal brick machine, they would have no interest in paying more. i could've probably sold it for 1000-1500 but would've had to put time and money into getting it ready to sell, putting up with people's bs etc.

Re: A New Accord
Hopefully your old one didn't go to the Accord graveyard. They really are nice cars, although unfortunately the ones I see around here are all in a terrible state of repair. Parts falling off, bumpers mismatched, exhaust seemingly an accessory, a badly fitting one at that, burnt paint. It really is said.potownrob wrote:tankinbeans wrote:does it really have a chain?? that's great as here i thought it was overdue for a timing belt change (101k miles). the 96 accord was due for its second t-belt change. i left the service history in the pocket behind the passenger seat in case one of the honda employees is actually interested in fixing it up . i bet it's getting turned into a metal brick at the junkyard as we speak...Should be lots of fun, and if it's the 4-cyl you'll have the timing chain instead of a belt which should help durability and you shouldn't have to deal with the grenading transmissions that I've heard about in the 6-cylinder models. Yep it has a chain, the 6-cyl car has a belt. Your mileage will likely be better than your 96. I noticed that I was consistently getting 23 when I had a 95 EX, but then I got the 03 LX Coupe and it went up to 27. I think the 03s are slightly lighter than the older ones, but I could be wrong.

Re: A New Accord
when i had the 96 (just got rid of it yesterday lol) i used to see 94-97 accords all over the place, some in seemingly good shape, others ghettofied and everything between. forgot to mention my 96 had a few dents, but mainly in places you wouldn't look. they were bad enough they would need a shop to work on but i didn't even really notice them most of the time.tankinbeans wrote:Hopefully your old one didn't go to the Accord graveyard. haz chain, haz life left!! i averaged 28 mpg overall with the 96 accord but most of my driving was commuting to work and back. i got (according to my calculations) 36 mpg on the way down to WV (for the SS meet last year) in between PA and western MD. my mom has tended to average (based on my calculations) 26-28 mpg with the 03 accord. i'll see if i can beat that .Yep it has a chain, the 6-cyl car has a belt. Re: A New Accord
haha thanks. it does feel a little weird to not have a manual anymore, but only when i think about it. if it were now a few years ago, i'd probably be kicking and screaming. the upgrade was my idea btw (just didn't expect my sister to say yes and for it to happen so quickly - was only proposed on sunday night)RITmusic2k wrote:Congratulations , you traitor !
