I can't remember anymore why that picture was posted or why everyone keeps quoting it and not really adding anything, so here's this:

Re: Project RA24 Celica
Progress has been slower than expected. It was a waiting game while I acquired better tools to get anything done.
Here's what I've accomplished in the past week:
Port matched the cylinder head and intake manifold.
Acquired an engine hoist and load leveler.
Removed the 22R shortblock from the trunk of the car.
Installed the flywheel.
Installed the clutch. I ended up aligning the clutch with a head bolt. If I ever have to do it again, I'll be using the input shaft from the old transmission.
Prepped the transmission for installation.
Surprisingly, the clutch was centered closely enough to get the transmission attached.
I'm installing the cylinder head today and prepping the car for removal of the old engine and transmission. Tomorrow will (hopefully) be engine swap day. Next steps will be rebuilding the carbs, draining the gas tank, and putting in a battery.

Re: Project RA24 Celica
I got the cylinder head installed with a great degree of difficulty. There was quite a bit of rust and other crap that had to be removed before I could get the head bolts to turn. The chain on the cam sprocket didn't have enough slack to allow the sprocket to slide on. I ended up lifting the sprocket with a screwdriver and turning the crank back and forth a few times until it fit.
Here it is with the valve cover on.

Re: Project RA24 Celica
It crossed my mind and I may still get one at some point if there was a need to move the engine out of the way or take the oil pan off.

I have to swap oil pans.mtheis wrote:...or take the oil pan off.
There just isn't enough clearance for the front of the 22R pan to clear the crossmember. Can you see the differences? 22R on the left and 20R on the right.
Both halves of the driveshaft were rusted together and required complete removal to separate them.
Here's the center console and shifter removed.
The car sits a bit higher now.
This is what happens when you think you're gonna be smart and not drain the transmission before removal and instead attach a bag over the end of it.

Re: Project RA24 Celica
That failed smartassery with the transmission fluid sounds like something I'd do.
What effects will the shallow oil pan have? Reduced oil change interval and increased oil temperature, I imagine...anything else?

Re: Project RA24 Celica
The pans are both the same depth in different places. Oil pickups will probably have to be swapped as well.

That's exactly why I coat my garage floor with an epoxy finish before I stain it will oil.
