I wasn't expecting to have this much difficulty with the swap. The motor mounts for the new 22R block are designed to attach further back (3rd gen Celica). That's no good. To use the old mounts closer to the front, I had to drill larger holes to accommodate the larger bolts required. This worked fine on the driver's side, but I also had to use the old alternator bracket so that the mount would sit flush. It has spacers for the bracket to fit behind it. It wasn't feasible to use the old mount on the passenger side because the bolts are spaced slightly further apart and would've required drilling too close to the edges of the mount for comfort. Thankfully, the 22R mount fits on the passenger side. However, the air pump bracket does not fit with the 22R mount. I can live with that. I just hope the inspection station can, too.

Old (the one I ended up using) and new alternator brackets:

I discovered that the transmission mount sits about an inch and half further back than on the original transmission. I read through a few Celica forums and found that I could flip the mount around and then it'll mount correctly. I think the rear crossmember also needs to be flipped around to fit (for the most part). No problem, right? Remove the mount and flip it around. Wrong! All four bolts were sheared off. I started to drill them out and then realized that I could just use the mount from the old transmission.

I swear the oil pan was welded. At least that's what it felt like when trying to remove it from the old block.

Oil pan and sump are now swapped so it'll clear the crossmember.

The engine went in easier than expected. I still don't understand how some people do this without a load leveler.

Here's a shot of both the transmission mount and rear crossmember flipped around so that two of the four bolts will fit, just as expected.

Drained 7 or 8 gallons out of the gas tank. Not too happy about that.

There's not much left to do before I can get it running. Still need to buy new radiator hoses, fuel hoses, battery, engine oil, antifreeze, and rebuild the carburetors. Before it's driveable, I also need to replace the rear suspension and brakes, fill the transmission with gear oil, get four new tires, new clutch slave cylinder, brake fluid, battery tray, and a few fuel filters.

I got the new clutch slave cylinder and oil pressure switch put in. Yesterday was spent taking apart the dash and tracing wires with a multimeter for the oil pressure light and temperature gauge. Those are the only two that I really care about right now. I also bled the clutch by myself with the help of a roofing hammer and a few blocks of wood to hold the pedal. The slave cylinder is on the passenger side. As soon as I figure out the ignition wiring and install the carburetors, this thing will be ready to start for the first time!

I figured that as soon as I got the car to run, I'd want to take it around the block. Now seemed like the right time to tackle the wheel cylinders. Hopefully I'll have them both done tomorrow so I can bleed the brakes and figure out where the hell the parking brake is binding. I'm getting some help from a friend with the carbs and ignition stuff on Friday.

Just need to put some straight pipes that dump right underneath the door or something and your exhaust is finished.

The one and only time it will be out of the garage until I get new tires and stuff.

I think it was from the flat spots and tread separation on the tires.
