Project RA24 Celica

Post by mtheis »

Original thread here.

Car: 1976 Toyota Celica GT. My brother bought it in 1986 and sold it to me a few days ago. It has ~230,000 miles on it. It's also been parked for the last 13 years.

Plan: 20R/22R "hybrid" motor (Google it) with dual carbs and a close-ratio 5-spd. I have 99% of the parts needed.

Expected difficulties: I've never done half of this stuff before.

It kinda resembles a ladybug with all of the rust spots on the hood.

This is the original 20R block that will be discarded.

In the trunk we have a dead bod- nevermind...
Image

It's actually the 22R block that will be going under the hood. :D

The cylinder head and transmission that I'll be using.

Two cobbaraydas.

Gaskets for pretty much everything.

And I'll be doing lots of reading.

I like some of that interior, the dash, steering wheel, door panels, and floors.

What's the switch panel looking thing under the left side of the dash?

Why not fuel injection? Because you already have carbs? Fuel injection should be easy and inexpensive for that engine.

That switch panel is actually the fuse panel. I'm sure fuel injection would work, but I've heard that the power gains are negligible with this particular setup. The 20R never had it and the 22R engine parts I have are different than the newer 22R/22RE. Maybe this car will see a 22RTE (turbo) swap at some point.

That's a nice place for a fuse panel. Mine is horrible, I wish I could relocate it. It's up against the firewall above the dead pedal.

Are you going to look to replace the hood? Or just recoat against rust?

The hood only has surface rust and will be repainted along with the rest of the car if I can find the paint codes. There are a few places where I'll need to weld in some new panels first.

Will you do your own welding? Do you have equipment and experience?

Negatory. I will most likely have someone else do the welding.

What kind of rebuild are you planning with this car? Full restoration, where the car will look completely new when you're done? Or just fix it up and drive it rebuild? Or maybe somewhere in the middle?
