I'm happy to hear the positive thoughts. The spaceball shifter is kinda nifty. I will admit, the extra gear makes for a bit more of a challenge to determine which gear is right.

Amazing how terrible the gearbox is in the winter. I've done some research and many people complain about getting locked out of first and second when the gearbox is cold. What's funny is sometimes I get locked IN first gear. Makes for some sticky situations. Like almost getting T-Boned a few times because of it.

Watkins - How's your gearbox. Especially over the last few weeks?

For anyone saying to warm the car up..I let it warm up for a few minutes.

Warming up the car by idling doesn't do much to warm up the gear oil in the trans.

Not much that you can do about the issues, outside of changing the gear oil. I've had good luck with Redline stuff before, but it's been a while. What I do remember is that it made shifting better on a trans with a lot of miles and worn syncros.

A clutch release system that's not fully effective when cold could also be contributing. Make sure the fluid is full and clean. Also try shifting into another gear first and then immediately into first.

Hmm I don't think its the clutch as a 1-3 shift works alright.

I've heard good things about the redline fluid as well. I'll definitely have to change the fluid if I plan on keeping the car. Though this was kind of one of those purchases I did just because.

If the clutch were dragging a little when it shouldn't, that could exacerbate issues with the lower-gear (hardest-working) synchros.

If shifts are equally bad with the engine off and clutch released the clutch is probably not a significant factor.

Hey, stop exacerbating on this site or you'll have to get off!

Multicone synchros are more sensitive to cold trans fluid because they have a lot of surface area and more restricted path for flinging-off excess fluid. Most likely to find them on the 1-2 synchronizers, but some boxes use them on 3-4 as well. I've even seen triple-cone on 1-2, and double-cone on 3-4. Hardly ever used on 5-6.

not sure what gear oil/lube would work best in your tranny (paging sir watkins??), but i found amsoil gear lube to work well in my maxima's finicky tranny. i changed it out every 20k miles, that tranny would get mean otherwise.

I sold it.

I just wasn't a fan of the sporty nature of the car. Bumper was too low so some finagling was needed to prevent scraping of the fascia. The low profile tires made some bumps a PIA. Though I did get used to it. Still, pot holes and other things were definitely worrisome. The gearbox was also very clunky IMO.

I do admit, I miss the power of the engine. It pulled so strong especially around 2k when the turbo kicked in. I also will miss the handling as it out handled the Civic in everything. The interior was nice..though definitely worn out. I'm sure the thing was something in its day. The stereo was absolute gold, especially playing CDs.

Onto the next project...

I don't want to make it seem like I hated the car, I definitely didn't. It just wasn't my style.

This makes me sad (tut mir leid?), but anyone could’ve seen this coming and you even predicted it. What’s up next, a Viggen?? I’ve been so busy researching and lusting after non-manual sport luxo cruisers that I forget what most of the good manual sport luxo cruisers are. :|

Edit: forgot this one used to come in manual formation...

I already can't remember what it was, and the photo doesn't load. What was it?

And yeah, in New England if you want to get there fast then a low-clearance sporty car is NOT a good choice with all the slowing for bumps and such.

I think it was the Volvo noted as sold in his signature.

Yeah, there is the occasional trip on which I'd like to take the 'Vette but think of a place on the route that could be a problem for the clearances and choose to take something else. As cars keep getting lower in pursuit of the vaunted MPGs, it gets more and more true that those looking for a practical only-vehicle in a lot of the country (and especially anyplace that regularly sees significant snow) are left with some form of truck, SUV, or CUV.
