i'm guessing it's the PB blaster burning off.

was it oily/greasy when you received it?

not really, it was pretty clean.

i definitely need to check on that a/c drain hose. otherwise i'll probably just give it some time and see how it goes. i'm due to change the oil in a little under 1k miles, so while i'm under there for that i'll check for leaks.

It's most likely the lubricant burning off. That's how mine was for almost a week and a half. Mine was new though, so maybe I was smelling that too, but I definitely smelled WD-40 in there.

you know, a beneficial side effect of the smell is that people don't seem to be tailgating me as much lately.

well, the a/c drain hose was definitely part of the problem. got under the hood today and it was touching my downpipe. a hole had melted into the hose and the clip holding it was also melted and deformed.

took out the clip, rerouted the hose and tied it off with some wire away from the downpipe. there's a good bit of black crap on the pipe. i tried to scrape some of it off, but i suppose it's going to be a while before it finally burns it all off.

Not to derail this thread.......
but i just noticed that your sig is not exactly accurate.

The reverse gear setup is ideal, and I wish there as a set up three helicals with a syncro...but it is in fact not like that, and the gearshift moves a physical spur gear up to engage the idler.

Hence the whurr sound and a satisfying crunch when you go into gear.

But honestly, I cannot see why one wouldn't have made reverse sychronized.

I can't think of ever having driven one except my truck that wasn't. Sure made me realize how sloppy I was being...I always stopped the vehicle, but getting into a vehicle without a synchronized reverse will train you fast to always make sure the input shaft is stopped too.

Wow, all the manuals I have driven have a non synched reverse.

And this ticks me off because, you can shift out of reverse while moving backward, and get into 1st quick...

but if you are moving forward and want to hit up reverse quick (such as backing into the driveway) you have to either stop, or lock up the wheels (along with output shaft) and slam it into reverse.

no your right raptor. when you put the shifter into reverse it puts the idler gear between the reverse gear and the layshaft, and it moves the dog collar into the reverse gear. if the idler gear was there the whole time, when you think about it, you wouldn't be able to move forward at all because the idler gear would be trying to move in the opposite direction.

yeah but the pig in your sig would work though.

The purple collar is what is always locked into that shaft, so even though the reverse gear would be spinning, it would be freewheeling the correct direction on the input shaft, and reverse on the output, which is the desired result.

If reverse on John's truck was ever synchronized, then it isn't now. Reverse grinding sounds kind of like you would imagine a bullet blowing out someone's knee...

so i'm kind of already used to the power increase from Stage 2, and i'm already thinking about what's next for more power.

i'm hoping that the cold weather during winter will make the car a bit faster, enough to hold me over until i can afford a protune. then i hope that can hold me over until i can afford a turbo upgrade!

damn that mod bug!

Drive north. Experience the amazing thing that is a turbo in true cold weather.
