Flat Black!
I want to paint my 2001 Ranger flat black with aerosol bombs, but it has a clear coat on the paint and I am not sure the flat black will stick. Should I take rubbing compound to it or some type of abrasive? I don't want to rub through to the metal and get rust but need to make that flat black stick!

Re: Flat Black!
2000 grit sandpaper and start wet-sanding until your current finish looks like the front quarter of the car in the picture. Once the surface of the clearcoat is scuffed in such way, the flat black should stick. My advice - plasti-dip. You can remove it later if you change your mind or it doesn't come out right.
That, or go to town and use spray-on bed liner on the thing.
Bedliner.

You should probably also mention that Plasti-Dip doesn't need a sanded finish in order to stick to paint. It can be applied over perfectly glossy & smooth paint and adhere just fine. And of course it can later be peeled right off and the paint underneath will look just as it did before the Plasti-Dip was applied.

Shadow - that's correct.
six - what rock have you been living under? Plastidip is like the herpes of the automotive forums - every other person's got it. Most commonly used on wheels, badges, grills, etc.

Lot of options, now to find the time, and for some warmer weather to come. When will winter end??????? It was 70 degrees Thursday (only warm day in a month) then yesterday it went to low 30s!

Re: Flat Black!
I have a ton of plasti dip on my car. Redid all the black plastic trim with it. I also did my badly chipped chrome (i hate chrome) grille, my mirrors, and my roof (would rather not have, but the paint was getting pretty ugly). I also use plasti dip as a temporary car bra in the winter. Spray it on before the first snow storm and peel it off in the spring.

Re: Flat Black!
I just picked up a spray can of black Plasti Dip. Now for warmer weather. I'll do the wheels and see how that goes, but they have rust and I think this stuff needs to go on a non rusted surface. Oh well, can't get any worse than it is.

It can go on any surface, since it doesnt actually adhere to it. Its more like a vinyl cling decal.

My kind of stuff. Maybe I'll try a completely flat black truck, including chrome, but for windows and lights.watkins wrote:It can go on any surface, since it doesnt actually adhere to it. Its more like a vinyl cling decal.
